Hayward Matrix Pool Pump rotation and installation

1) How do I rotate the pump?

You did it the hard way. Nothing to remove if you just reach under the pump and push on the tab and rotate the housing.

yes but if you don't remove the basket, rotate it 90 degrees and then put it back together it will be sideways.

Hey Mike, is there a seal or o ring between the pump and the union where u attached the filter. Just curious because I have a small drip between the filter and the pump. I sure hope u still check your comments.

Do most pumps do this? Looking at pumps on the Amazon and just about all of them are shown discharging up.

If the pump doesn’t show that it rotates then I would not assume it does. Hopefully the seller will be able to tell you if you ask ;)

No - only if you want to change the configuration to match your setup. If the orientation is good for you then no need to change it.

Just curious, why did you remove the basket? Wouldn't it have just turned along with the section you turned. Thanks for pointing out where that tab was. Edit: Well. I followed your video along with the manual and the install went perfectly. I'm guessing that the horseshow clip would have held the basket too tight to turn and that's why it needed to be removed. Don't know how anyone could press that tab down without your screwdriver trick. Thanks again!

I wonder if you can help me. I have a Hayward matrix power flo 2 speed above ground pool pump and I need to change the switch. Here ia my problem. The back of the pump does not have that cover that comes right out with one screw. Mine has two holes in wich seem to have flat screws. But even if I unscrew these, the back does not pull out. I did not take the screws completely out not knowing if it is ok to do so. Can you help me in telling me exactly how to reach that switch. Thanks.

I just came across your video and I am glad you did not add teflon thread tape to the male end of the coupler; there is a 2 1/4" rubber seal on the inside of that male end which connects to the female end. Adding teflon tape will not allow the threads to tighten enough against that rubber seal thus causing a minor leak or a larger leak depending on how much tape you wrapped around those threads. Good video on replacing your pump. Cheers.

Wow did this help. Like an absolute moron I’m out in yard with that union piece attached to the filter and the center wasn’t turning and I forgot how it went. So I’m cocking the filter sideways as I try to literally screw the pump on and like, it’s heavy and couldn’t get it centered and I said no damn way this is how it’s done🤦🏼‍♂️

For the union you don’t need tape as it is a compression seal. Tape would not be recommended for this as it may impede the ability to fully tighten down the union.

Does it have to have a union from filter to pump? I bought same motor but new and it had a different fitting than my old motor so unused a hose and clamps....but I'm having zero suction somehow. What is grey stuff u painted on?

The grey stuff is Pipe Dope. The manual says not to use it on threaded fittings and use Teflon tape instead. I use Pipe Dope and hose clamps where flexible hoses fit over the tapered fitting (the opposite end of where he 'painted' on the dope) and only have friction to keep them connected.

I have to remove the pump from the mounting plate to change the basket nut the screws are very rusted........any tips on how to remove the pump fro mounting plate?

I'm not sure what mounting plate you mean but If the bolts are really rusty I'd gently tap them with a hammer (Don't tap the threads, only tap the top of the bolt or the nut). Then use a penetrating fluid that you can buy from any hardware store and follow the directions on the label. DON'T force it as you will likely snap the bolts. There are lots of videos on youtube that I'm sure you've already watched... Best of luck with it :)

Mike I am unable to lock this in position I do not want to break it- The guy that designed it should be shot- the button should be raised to get to it.Any suggestions? I am trying to gently trying to get it to click but it just will not go!

dennis seger - I’m not sure what to mean won’t lock. Do you mean you already rotated it and at the end of the rotation it is not locking into position? If so rotate it back and see if it will lock in the original position. You can give a pretty good slam into position (not too hard though). If you’re unit is new and is not locking then I’d bring it back to what’s you bought it as it should be working.

SOunds like you may have a scratch or something in the union where the to piece meet - - I'd disassemble and carefully inspect both pieces - even a small defect can cause a leake here.

I just got this very pump yesterday. Got it installed and it's leaking water at the cap line. So aggravated! Any ideas what might be the problem? Also, I put the proper lube on the O ring too. Thanks in advance.

Do you mean the cap itself is leaking? I'd take a very close look at the o-ring and make sure it is not damaged. If it's in good shape, you have the cap put on correctly and it's leaking then you may have a dud.
