This song introduces our buddy Ned He represents Tyler’s creativity, but also his perfectionism and inner critic, so he has a love/hate relationship with Ned. The pool represents the songwriting process, which is slow at first. Tyler uses his writing to cleanse his mind and tackle mental health issues (“I’m running for my life”) A small amount of chlorine can cleanse, but too much can be toxic. He needs to be careful not to be consumed by the process. Ned will only jump in when the pool (song) is just right and it transforms him (his antlers grew). You will see Ned again 😼 This was written after the craziness of the Blurryface album era, which threw them into the mainstream due to the success of Stressed Out, Ride, as well as Heathens (from Suicide Squad soundtrack). So the song is explaining to the fans why Tyler went into deep isolation while he wrote this album (Trench). “The moment is medical,” “don’t save my seat, I’ll be back when it’s all complete.” Trench is a concept album going deeper into the character of Blurryface and it’s a masterpiece. You should check out “Holding Onto You” (Live at Fox Theater), “Ode to Sleep,” “Fairly Local,” “Heathens,” “Heavydirtysoul,” and when you are ready to dive into more lore, the Trench Trilogy (“Jumpsuit,” “Nico and the Niners,” and “Levitate” in that order). This is about the music making process he compares it to Chlorine because in small doses, Tyler needs music to help get his thoughts out and cleanse himself, but it can become overwhelming and become toxic - just as too much chlorine can the other part here is this came in the Trench album, which was right after Blurryface when they became famous worldwide with Stressed Out, Ride, and then eventually Heathens was also released right after as a single with Suicide Squad - they took a year long hiatus where they just completely disappeared before the release of the Trench album - so "the moment is medical" and "when i leave don't save my seat, i'll be back when it's all complete" refer to this hiatus and basically saying they needed this time off to cleanse but don't worry, we're coming back when we're ready lastly, Ned is the little character - he does show up in later music videos as well - he represents their creativity - so they are aiming to please Ned - you can see he isn't willing to take the plunge until everything is perfect - then at the end when it's back to just the little cup, he isn't impressed anymore i'd say to try Car Radio, Migraine, or Lane Boy

One thing I like about this song, is that you can really hear Paul Meany's influence. Paul Meany is/was the frontman for the band MuteMath which was one of my favorite bands growing up, and Mutemath and TOP had the opportunity to work together, and Paul helped produce this album. I do highly recommend checking out Mutemath, even if on your own time. Especially for the first three albums, where Darren King was an absolute beast on the drums. A couple songs I'd say to check are Plan B (Live) Armistice (Live) Burden (live)

Ned represents Tyler's creativity. The sipping on chlorine is Tyler writing music. It's cleansing, but if he takes too much, it harms him.
