Just to be a smara**, cold does not leak into a building, heat leaks out. 😊 If you can find someone with an infrared camera you can scan the exterior of the house (at night) to see where the worse air leaks are. If there are some that you can plug up easily it might help. Stay safe!

Technically cold leaks into a house in the form of wind, if there are holes or gaps somewhere wind will always find them. But yes heat does go out of a house in the form of convection as well.

Kaleb, don't sell yourself short. I know you were probably being self depreciating, but I was literally thinking "this is why I love this channel. He explains why he has made every decision down to the type and brands of wood filler in what type of holes." Even if you're someone like me that will never take on a project of this magnitude, I'm still being taught that it's ok and valid to critically think about the little decisions in a project. It all adds up to the finished whole.

My husband uses screws wherever possible rather than nails because if he needs to remove them at a later date he can do so without causing damage. He also uses them on exterior gates so he can (hopefully) replace them easily when they corrode which even the best quality do here as we live by the sea! I'd like to say I marvel at your endless patience and determination to achieve a quality finish. Best wishes for 2024 .Julia in Cornwall England

One idea to try,especially because you’re in the basement so much( shower,laundry,workshop,etc.) is to go to Harbor Freight and buy a BUNCH of cheap,canvas drop cloths and staple them to the basement ceiling beams.(like GIGANTIC ceiling tiles) It may help with insulation but also make it feel less creepy and MUCH brighter. I’ve seen it on KZbin when people have done a temporary basement remodel until they can afford the whole shebang, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE it makes!🙌🏻👍👌
@discoj7112 Жыл бұрын
It might be a good idea to either use something rated for use in a home (like large window curtains) or do a bit of fireproofing to the canvas to make it a bit safer for long term use. There's usually a lot of electrical stuff in the rafters, so fire safety is a concern.

Hey man. I know you love to use screws, but you can use that finish nailer and put a nail in diagonally right on top of the tongue. The next board will hide the nail and you'll never see any of them. Also, in that way you're attaching each board to the one before it.

Good progress, love the real beedbiard quality and look. Are you going to treat the bottom foot or so with an anti-rot agent before painting? This cold snap is gonna catch a lot of homeowners off guard. Be prepared. We build here in MT for cold weather. Our home is a 1936 Tudor-Revival Brick Cottage with a full basement, but it was insulated when built oretty well. The previous owners added sufficient atic insulation, too, which helps a lot. But most basement pipes in a cold climate can always benefit from pipe insulation. It is very, very cheap and easy to cut and install. Best for all your hot water lines, including the ones on top of the water heater. I also used it in our basement shower pipes between the outside wall and the shower and all water lines or pips that are close to an outside wall. It has lowered our hot water heating cost, too. They are easy to remove if I need to work on any plumbing issues or upgrades. Our basement is heated and cooled with the rest of the house, but I'd rather have spent the 50 cents per 3 ft section of pipe foam insulation (2021 price), than ever have a chance of a water pip bursting from freezing. Even the incoming waterline after the meter has a few feet of insulation, where it is within 6 inches of the outside wall. May be overkill, but it just makes sense if you can get access to the water pipes. Hot water pipes act like a radiator cooling the hot water as it travels or sits in the pipes between uses. Stopping that alone is worth the trouble. See if you can get a free winterizatoon inspection from your local utilities, LEAPE, or similar agency. They can made personal recommendations for things you can do, even if you still have open winders and other huge gaps in your roof. Can't wait to see the beedboard painted in the next video.

Caleb explains it in an earlier video. It’s related to moisture and how it’s below ground level and the mortar that is used to let the walls breath rather than concrete like what was there previously that suffocated and brought deterioration to the walls. To be insulation to the walls would cause moisture. Not sure if there are good alternatives. That’s just what I remember him explaining when addressing the question.

@Lucinda_Jackson Жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree and was hoping somebody would say it so I wasn't the only one! 😂 I understand the desire to make all the doors match, but this isn't really a door in the same sense, so wouldn't need to match. And I, too, think it would look better if it just blended into the wall and "disappeared". Since it's partially painted and partially exposed wood, hold it up or have Kim hold it up so you can stand back and get a look. You can get a better sense of how it would look both ways and you can make a better decision. Heck, if it was mine, I'd make the door out of beadboard attached to a backing and lined up with the beadboard in the wall so that it REALLY disappeared. 🤷🏼♀️ But in the end, I'll love it however you choose to do it.
