If you want to get into VGC play on Pokémon Showdown, the barrier to entry is much lower. They’re also many different formats or“game modes” you can try that aren’t just VGC.

@jamesmoniz52639 ай бұрын
@@deoxxysYES. don't play VGC unless you're just looking for a casual experience. If you're legit looking for a competitive experience singles is THE way to go. VGC refuses to ban or balance anything (they don't do bans). Its filling with rng BS and spamming over powered mons. There is no care taken to uphold the competitive integrity of the format and its only popular because Nintendo spends dummy amounts of money promoting it. This coming from a pretty mid competitive ex-competitive player. I've stolen some games from top level players, so I feel comfortable calling myself mid (aka not just some rando).

4:50 This generation of pokemon has been the most interesting competitive game to date! Wolfe Glicke and everyone at Beastcoast Pokemon are a great learning resource. I will say, it's a pain to get into tournaments with how expensive and time consuming it can be to get a standard team (buying games with exclusive legendaries and training your team). But Pokemon Showdown is a great alternative as a battle simulator with it's own competitive ladder.

my favorite warf combo is breaking the fish that on faint gives the mana on attack fruit and just making the warf 50/50, been winning a lot with that, it's like a rhino but it snipes stuff behind randomly sometimes anything else appearing is just bonus like a roc or something else to make it hit more times

Ok kinda random. But comp pokemon was brought up. If you wanna get into pokemon and you're a competitive person. Ignore VGC, doubles is the least competitive format, and its only popular because its super short games and the pokemon company spends dummy money promoting it. Competitive singles and smogon is where you gotta go if you want actually competitive pokemon (competitive as in formats that are balance around being played competitively, and tournaments with mad amounts of skill on display)
@KaikiIsTaken7 ай бұрын
I'll have to disagree, both doubles and singles have their own competitive space. Some pokémons such as Whimsicott, Incineroar and things like Tailwind and Intimidate are much more viable on VGC and the format opens up a lot of cool strategies that are impossible to work on singles.
@jamesmoniz52637 ай бұрын
@@KaikiIsTaken It isn't a competitive format though? As in there is no balancing decisions. Evasion and sleep (in gen 5 is really bad) are unimpaired, and the formats are literally not balanced. Not as in "they are literally trash", but as in, Im being literal, they don't ban things or adapt the format to make it remotely competitive. Its ok to have fun in, and a format doesn't need to be competitive for people to take it seriously and play it. But if you're looking for maximum skill expression doubles just isn't it. (by design, its made to be 100 times faster than traditional games, and with as few restrictions as possible to make it easy to on board for people coming from the games.) (just to be clear, not saying there can't be tech, and people playing at the top level in VGC, or that its an issues with the concept of doubles battles. Its that VGC actively avoids adapting the format to be remotely competitive. Its an explosive concept [double battles] and formatting it without 0 consideration to competitive play or balance. Which is fine, and leads to an explosive format [which is what casual players tend to enjoy, short games with high stakes on every move that can decide the game]) (sorry this comment is getting massive~ but also, those listed strategies are also a thing in singles. I'd more list things like EQ spam along side your own flying/levitating pokemon and redirecting abilities as strategies unique to doubles. Pre regenerator, intimidate was debatably the best ability in the entire game, whimsicott does use its prankster ability in singles to sets up for other sweepers on your team, as well as in incineroar at points [I don't play much gen 7, so correct me if this is out of date info] being incredibly viable. Again not trying to say doubles can't have unique tech, just you didn't list any examples of that.)
@KaikiIsTaken7 ай бұрын
@@jamesmoniz5263 Honestly you're way off if you think Tailwind is a viable strategy for singles, it simply isn't. It's such a turn-consuming strategy that gets easily countered by a single turn trick room. Incineroar, Whimsicott, Grimmsnarl and others are only viable on the lowest tiers, and let's be honest, there are better options even there. Some moves, pokémons and strategies are only ever viable because of VGC's quick battle scheme. Being able to abuse Tailwind without switching, Intimidate affecting 2 pokémons at once, switching out pokémons from either side of the battlefield, that not to mention useless moves being great such as Helping Hand, Wide Guard, Follow Me, Heal Pulse, among others.
@jamesmoniz52637 ай бұрын
@@KaikiIsTaken it literally was at some gen 6 and 7 teams at one point. prankster tailwind (ideally into getting knocked out for a free switch) into a slow u-turn (so the pokemon coming in doesn't take a hit), there was also some red card builds I recalled hearing about. (I think its also been used on offensive threats in and of themselves, because they don't require a switch to get a pay off) Lots of funky things prankster enables. Though I feel its important to mention, there is a difference between balanced, and having the most gimmicks. Double has no bans, a few unique mechanics, so ofc it has more things. But a ton of random stuff thrown into a pot without any consideration doesn't make for a competitive format. (also you're really letting your lack of experience show if you're not able to understand how insanely good intimidate is in singles, thats not remotely unique to doubles) VGC (not doubles as a whole, because Im not saying its impossible for a competitive doubles format to exist, in fact I think they do, they just aren't popular if Im not mistaken) has more things, but more things doesn't equate to competitive virtue. Just gonna take a wild guess and assume you haven't played competitively, just based on how you're making wild assertions about what is and isn't strong or viable in singles.(incorrectly) (also on that point about it being countered by trick room~ trick room isn't as common as in VGC. Trick room is typically run on bulk and hard hitting mons like reuniclus, not multiple pokemon on the same team. In addition to just not being a meta staple in most gens. Its good in gen 5, but relegated to only subsets of sand or HO steams. And in later gens its just not nearly as oppressive [gens 1-7 at least, Im no expert in gen 8 singles])

Fake news lol. This coming from someone who's a pretty mid singles player (I've stolen a fair share of games against top level comp players). Singles is by far more competitive and has more room for skill expression. Doubles has no balancing or bans, so the meta's get more centralized with less matchups you need to understand. In addition to much shorter games. VGC is a much less competitive format, but also easier to on board to if you're looking for casual fun. As a competitive player its not appealing to me, but its certainly not the more complicated format
