Samsung adopting larger outer screen ratio is the best move to make. Love software on Samsung too much to move to any other foldable. Some of the highlights. - Option to have different outer and inner screen configurations - Edge panel - Secure folder - Gallery is too powerful - Studio is unmatched - Reminders - Samsung notes - Spen - Dex - Multi-tasking capabilities - Home up for customization. These are some of the things I love. For people that don't use these features, they think these are gimmicks or bloat. For folks that use, these features are way more productive.

I concur. I have both phones (z5/Open) and the one UI kicks butt on Android 14 over Oxygen . However, I do like my One plus open form factor with the bigger screens. I switch back and forth between the phones.

I like both. However, the size of the outer and inner screen on the One Plus Open wins me over. Plus, the Open is a lighter phone. If you like the Dex, then go with Z Fold 5. I use both phones but I am on the Open more. Samsung needs to step up with the 6 or I will get the Open 2. I probably will get Open 2 anyway.

The Z Fold charges at 25w and comes with just the cable. The Open charges at 67w and also includes the 67w adapter. The Open also includes a case. The Z Fold has 12gb of Ram and 256gb of storage for $1800. The Open has 16gb Ram and 512gb of storage for $1700. Trade in any phone in any condition to OnePlus and the price drops to $1500. The Open destroys the Fold in every way other than wireless charging. It isn't close. This video didn't paint the Open or yourself in a very flattering light, John.

Jon, is your Open’s display set to Vivid mode? I compared mine next to my Z Fold 5 and in vivid mode the displays look almost identical. Also, there’s no way the Open really hits 2800 nits… it looks the same as my Fold 5 and 14 Pro Max outdoors in the Florida sun. Very good for sure, but I don’t believe for a second that it’s hitting +1000 nits higher than either phone.

It is hitting 2800 if you are watching HDR content under Florida sun. There are 2 values for brightness, whole screen brightness and 5/10% screen brightness

Yeah it looks like he's comparing OnePlus's default color mode (Natural) to Samsung's default color mode (Vivid) and then just saying that the Z Fold 5 has way better screens because he likes saturated colors. Objectively, the OnePlus has screens with higher pixel densities, brighter max and peak brightness (max is slider to full, peak is auto-brightness enabled outdoors on 5% of the screen), and lower minimum refresh rates for battery life. And besides that the screens are pretty much identical. Oh and the Open has that anti-glare inner screen protector which is quite nice to have.

One thing I like on the fold that OnePlus hasnt done on the open and maybe i haven't found the setting yet, but when you have the fold, you can fold the zfold for viewing modes. I can fold it up like chair and watch a video. OnePlus is either front screen viewing or open viewing.

I've just received my OnePlus Open a few days ago and I definitely understand your frustration with the non-separation of the outer screen layout with the inner screen layout. My Wife has the Fold 4 and the multitasking is definitely usable [just like the OnePlus Open] but with being able to separate the layouts and keeping them natively customizable for epic UI experiences, thus, giving Samsung advantage points. Hopefully, we'll see improvements, as-well-as concerns addressed in future Oxygen updates. Other than that, I absolutely LOVE the OnePlus Open. For me, it's a breath of fresh air not being locked under the restraints of size, weight, user-friendliness and the OS itself. I've been using iPhones ever since the first inception of it in 2007'ish and we even have an Apple eco-system. In addition to that, we've established an Android/ Samsung Ecosystem for the past 4 years and getting into a new OS proves that there are actually really good options out there in the Mobile world. I want an open so bad but its just the whole getting it fixed thing that bothers me. Ive heard one plus is such a hassle to deal with. I'd only get one from a place that offered an insurance like apple where i can just walk into multiple locations and get my phone fixed or replaced. I dont want to deal with the whole sending it off thing. I know best buy has geek squad but i dont know exactly how it works.

It’s the same process as an Apple Store wall in. They most likely can’t repair it in store. They will give you a replacement or ship one to you overnight. Then you move your data over and return the old phone.

I dont use my mini 4 anymore, you would need at least 11 inches or above to justify using tablet with foldable phone but it depends on your usage. If its for the movies you might consider like 16:9 or 21:9 tablets that foldables cant provide yet.

Everything about the Open is better. Usually foldables have better hardware but worse software vs Samsung when it comes to multitasking but oneplus wins in both. It even has pen support for both screens with the Oppo pen. Only lacking wireless charging and an IP rating. Samsung better stop being so lazy with their Fold series

​@@DUICE08and one brave soul on Reddit even submerged his Open to test and it survived just fine. An IP rating isn't some legally binding promise by a manufacturer that it will survive. It just means they tested it on a machine. OnePlus for the past *several* years has been of the opinion that they should build the phone to withstand water submersion, but save the production costs by not buying and running the IP_8 tests.

traded my s23 Ultra on the One Plus Open. I loved it until I didn't. I was watching a video in the kitchen. I closed the phone and walked to my living room. I opened the phone and it had lines all over it. I called One Plus and shipped it in for repairs. They received it 1-19-2024 as of today 2-29-2024 I haven't heard from them. I emailed and chatted and they keep saying someone will get in touch with me. Like I said the phone is great until it isn't. They're warranty and repair is horrible. They're communication for repairs is beyond horrible.

One Plus finally nailed the formula for foldables. The "main" display is the outside one, not the inside. I can't wait for Samsung to catch up with the zf6, you know, with the s24 screen outside, flat so I can get an actual tempered glass protector, none of that UV glue BS.

He says the inner display of the Open is better but doesn't show how much bigger the black bars are on the phone when consuming media. It has a squarer aspect ratio which means videos you watch either in YT, Netflix or any other service will have huge black bars on top and bottom compared to the Fold 5. How does having bigger black bars when consuming video make the inner display aspect ratio of the Open better? Also why do these revewers keep mentioning the supposed NITS of the Open when it's been proven it's marketing BS. Every tester that actually measureed the actual brightness with measurement tools (hardware not software) like GSM Arena have shown that the inner screen of the Fold 5 is actually brighter when in direct sunlight than the Open. The outer screen is basically a wash in the tests (he did show and mention that but didn't show the inner screen). He also says the hinges are the same and he never mentions that the Open can't open or hold angles like the Fold 5 does. It actually falls down past 45 degrees and can't hold angles like the Fold because of how huge the camera bump is and the actual tension of the hinge spring. He also talks about the not so sure service or supply of the phone in the US which is true. OnePlus doesn't have service centers or a warehouse in the US and repairs or repalcements will be an issue (I spoke to their reps multiple times about this and they coulldn't answer my concerns). Multi taking is also somehting he glazes over. With the Open and their flow system, you can only open a max of 3 windows, you can't even do pop-ups if I wanted a calculator or additional one or 2 when power using the phone. He also doesn't mention that you can't change aspect ratios of the Open when multi tasking. With the Fold 5, I can move my screens from portrait to landscape when I need a better viewing angle or aspect ratio with just a simple tap tap. You can't do it on the Open. EDIT: I had the Open and returned it because of the inner screen aspect ratio and software glitches of the open, pklus the uncertainty of service. So yeah this is first hand experience.

The OnePlus Open can have floating windows, just only some applications support it. The non-modded KZbin for example doesn't support being a floating app, but other apps do. You can also turn your OnePlus Open from portrait to landscape and it will just work as well. It was merely a software update and auto-rotate needed for that functionality. You jumped the gun too quickly and returned it before it was fully baked.

Fold 5 works great specially for me when I use it for work on the go and I'm able to fully use all my apps 7-8 at a time when working and multi tasking. We are only 1 month away now from the Galaxy showcase, guessing the Fold 6 is going to be at it, from the sounds of the rumors, much of peoples issues with the Fold 5 are going to be addressed and fixed, was going to upgrade in a week, but decided to hold off till after that event, that way I know for sure which phone is best for how I use my phone, which sidenote, is just watching videos on it, not cameras, pens, etc..

Have you even tried different color modes? Just to note that OnePlus Open inner display has higher ppi. Anti reflective layer. Less crease. Both displays support stylus. Along with ProXDR mode. What advantage does zfold display have?

I don't see the big deal with the behind the screen fingerprint sensor. I want the least amount of fingerprints on my screen as possible. I prefer the side fingerprint sensor because my thumb can easily rest on it to open the phone. I find it extremely convenient.

It is worth to said that if you buy the one plus open from a 3dr party like best buy, the warranty wont cover anything. So i would defenetly recomend to buy it straight from one plus. That geek squad insurance completely worthless for foldable phones.

Thanks for your awesome review for both devices. However, you forgot to mention a key point here. Samsung Fold has an IP X 8 which us water resistant. Unlike Oneplus which has IP X4 which is non water resistance just splash of water. Kindly mention this point as this is where I believe Samsung Fold is superior than the Oneplus.

If Samsung is "so good" in software, why don't they make their own OS. Why still piggy back off Google Android. I have been a Samsung user from the first Galaxy to the Note 8. Samsung's overlay on Android progressively bothered me. Forcing me to start making Samsung accounts for the same functionality that I already had with Google. Always waiting for Samsung to eventually push out their OS updates, when Google has Nexus updates out for months, if not a year. Eventually decided to make the switch to Nexus and now the Pixel Fold. I just don't need a duplicate account of the same thing between Samsung and Google, especially with Google Pay. I really like the I can custom the Pixel Android to what I want it to do. Samsung, have to almost play with their rules. Just like Apple's iOS. To me, Samsung's UI hinders my Android experience. I prefer the pure Android experience. And I am loving my Pixel Fold.

WHY is the screen better, WHAT about the software is better... for a 16 minute video this was pretty hollow

I have see two on Twitter doing the rounds, no doubt reposted by Samsung fans. I am sure there are more but the Galaxy Fold 4 had many hundreds even thousands if you include the screen protector peeling off.

I think one bonus point for Samsung. Their promos are sometimes great. I got fold 5 for close to $1000 and some others got it for less. One plus doesn't offer similar offers

?? OnePlus offers $200 for sending them literally any phone. It doesn't even have to work. Send them in some shitty nokia from 20 years ago. They also offer great trade-in prices on top of that guarantee, and run a discount program for Students, recent Grads, and first responders that gives 15% off (which is applied to the starting price, so it's the maximum possible discount). Some people trading in current gen iPhones or Z Fold 5s got the Open for literally around $100-$200.

It looks like they only accept trade ins for certain models. I have a galaxy s5 and that isn't on the list, so it can't be used.

If you're going to say something like "the ZFold has objectively better displays" then you need to back that up with something objective... The Open's displays are brighter and have a higher pixel density. The peak refresh rate is the same on both phones, but the screens on the Open scale down to lower minimum refresh rates for battery savings. The color accuracy is practically perfect on both phones, and both are using the exact same OLED tech. The Open even comes with an anti-glare inner screen protector which helps a *ton* with outdoor brightness and usability. Objectively, the OnePlus has the better displays. You might subjectively prefer the screens on the fold (likely because of the color settings you have selected in the OS. Oneplus has accurate colors by default, whereas Samsung chooses saturated, vivid color grading as the default setting), but to act like your opinion is an objective fact is pretty arrogant.

The OnePlus Open passed JerryRigEverything's durability test. Check his video out, it's very thorough. He also made another follow up video too. And I disagree with software, the Open Canvas approach to multitasking is objectively superior.

I tried the OnePlus Open but prefer the Z Fold 5. The only thing I really liked better about the Open was the outer screen but that wasn't enough to make up for the lack of wireless charging, lack of DEX and generally worse software experience. Hopefully Samsung will re-think their aspect ratio for the Fold 6.

I don't like the aspect ratio on the inner screen on the OnePlus Open because it's to square and makes rotating the phone pointless. On the Z Fold5, you can rotate the inner screen and go a little wider on the screen if you want to use it that way. And the outer screen on the Z Fold5 is fine as the main thing with those foldable phones are the inner screen, so having a 'too good' outer screen, just makes people use the outer screen most of the times instead then. So Samsung obviously knows this. Now, the Z Fold6 will most likely get a 21:9 screen on the outside. That's actually the most optimal aspect ratio on the outer screen for a foldable smartphone without making the foldable aspect of it less useful.

Rotating the Open still puts the apps into landscape mode formatting, which is different from portrait mode in many cases. It also positions the speakers better for stereo audio, and actually is slightly more screen for videos. I will never understand ZFold users who try and sell a hard-to-use outer screen as a feature. It's not a good thing. I have the same excellent inner screen space on my Open, but I can actually use my phone without opening it up 24/7. I can pull my phone out of my pocket, clear notifications, reply to messages, scroll reddit for a bit, then put it back and my experience was not worse in *any* way than just using a normal phone. And then when I want to watch a video or multitask or any of the various reasons I might want more screen space, I can open it up, and have a large format experience that is just as good as a Z Fold, if not *better*. Edit: also, a more normal folded aspect ratio makes Tent and Clamshell modes *much* better.

@@AuraMaster_7 The point is still that you won't see any differences between portrait and landscape mode if you are going to surf on the web, looking on pictures, reading documents, playing games and so on. On the Z Fold5, you will see differences on all of those things. Not only that, but because the Z Fold5 is narrower over the OnePlus Open when holding it fully open in portrait mode, it's much easier to hold around it with your fingers. This is why the Z Fold5 is overall better when it comes to this.

Wireless charging is still such a lame'n slooowwww thing. I understand that a lot of reviewers are into it but... It's so slowww and great if you remain in one place all day (and then why not use cabled) but for everybody else. Nah.... Never!

Samsung's outter screen is nearly useless. OnePlus' customer service is trash, especially given their questionable screen issues. Pixel fold can be quirky and sometimes unstable. That statement is from my perspective as an owner. The saddest part is that all of these issues are easily remedied if they wanted to fix them.

Software category cant go to Samsung when the most important aspect of a folding phones software is the multitasking. OnePlus multitasking is far better than Samsungs. It isnt close.

This was a fair comparison of both. I personally chose the Fold5 for the Samsung software, ecosystem, and maturity of both hardware and software design. The long-term perceived reliability also matters. Of course I do wish the front screen was wider but you get used to it. The Open is good as a media consumption device, but if you want productivity, the Fold5 beats the Open easily.

How did you miss Face ID on the Open? Also, The IR blaster? The snap open hinge? The almost absent crease? Honestly seems like these features not mentioned on purpose. Samsung is tired. The Open is better in a ton of ways. Look at the other reviews.

Not everyone wants a snap open hinge. The one plus cant hold its angles as well as the fold 5 which you can use as a tripod in many different situations or a makeshift stand. Past 45 degrees the one plus doesnt stay open.
