Air conditioning systems are often not exactly sustainable and environmentally friendly. Germany as a whole is much more conscious in the context of sustainability. In addition, their cost in terms of electricity consumption is disproportionate to the approximate 2 week requirement.

Not only that, the quick switch between cold and warm is bad for your immune system and could result in you becoming sick. Because of this reason some companies don't even allow their delivery drivers to use the AC in their delivery van in the summer

The reason to not pass on the right on the Autobahn is because it’s illegal. Not because people aren’t used to it. If you’re caught it’ll cost 100 euros + a point in Flensburg. If you have 8 points in Flensburg, you’ll loose your license.

1. Unfortunately, that's not entirely true. Many stores are closed on Sunday, but not all of them, and it also depends on the "Shop Opening Act" [Ladenöffnungsgesetz (LÖG)] of the respective federal state. For example: In my region you are allowed to open stores 4 days a year on Sundays, in Berlin 8 days and if you serve tourism, the whole year - and so on... 2. This is grossly exaggerated. In 99.999999_% of cases, unlimited speed is followed by a speed of 120 km/h or 100 km/h. In addition, in many federal states, a speed camera must be at least 100 meters (or more) behind the sign. So you have enough time to adjust to the pace. The lowest speed on the Autobahn is 60 km/h. Traffic may only be slowed down in absolute exceptions. 3. The fact that the bathroom costs money in Germany, is a psychological trick, that works in most cases. Because people deal with things much more respectfully - or in this case more cleanly - if they have paid something for them. Side effect: The cleaning staff can be better paid from the resulting profit. Whether that will happen is another matter... 4. & 5. are simplified, but correct so far.

Im dutch, so im not sure about this one, but my dad always says that on german highways there is unlimited speed unless said otherwise. And if you get into an accident driving faster than the limit or on the unlimited speed parts, faster than 130km/h, your insurance company will not pay, and you have to do so yourself. Is this true? Or is my dad incorrect. (Which is very much possible)
@sèdnuvès
@sèdnuvès 3 жыл бұрын
@@SikkyCheesecake Put simply, your father is right; but it's something German, so much more complicated. 130 km/h is the recommended maximum speed in Germany. It's called "Richtgeschwindigkeit". This can also be lower than 130 km/h by sign. (blue square sign with white numbers) Courts and insurance companies assume that the ideal state of safest driving is achieved by not exceeding them. So if there is an accident, - in which you are not the polluter, you will have to bear some of the blame. The amount of this is regulated in the contract with your insurance company. - in which you are the polluter, it can happen that you not only have to bear some of the blame, but also the entire costs for the other party and also for yourself.

I'm glad that these guys calmed down during the video. Yes, you will pay to use a German bathroom in Euro cents. I've paid €0.20, €0.50, €0.75 & €1.00 to use a restroom in a department store, public restroom in a plaza, in a bus station and on the side of the road at a gas station. But let me tell you this, THEY ARE MOSTLY SPOTLESSLY CLEAN!!! Also, there are a few different ways they collect money. Most of the public toilets have a turnstile type entrance. You must insert money first for the turnstile/plastic doors to unlock/open. Sometimes before you enter a restroom, there is a bathroom attendant standing outside the bathroom doors, with a bowl on a stool for coins, who goes and cleans the bathroom every so often. The bathrooms are usually quite clean. Lastly, there is just a bowl on a table between the male & female facilities for you to drop some change in. These are usually the least clean bathrooms but still usually WAY better than an American bathroom at a gas station. Except for a Bucc-ees bathroom.

Hi John. There are some (gas station) bathrooms in Germany where you just have to ask for the key. Do not expect a clean place then. If you're on the Autobahn, just stop at a "Parkplatz" and have a wee in the wild. Just watch your steps, others might have had the same idea.

Closed sundays: most US expats like it after living in Germany for a while. Restaurants and some corner shops (Kiosks) are open. You need food? Go to the next larger train or gas station. Or get your life sorted and do your shopping during the week. "Blitzers": the two are exaggerating wildly. Speed limit on the Autobahn will not go from unlimited to 30 kph. I've never seen a speed limit of 30 kph on the Autobahn. Even if, 30 is absolutely unusual on the Autobahn. 60 or 80 kph would be common in construction areas Air condition: usually there are two or three weeks of realy hot weather in Germany. If you can't handle that, go to a public swimming pool or a lake/river and refresh yourself - or get a fan.

Left lane is always the passing lane. We just don't follow what we learned in driving school. I hate the "Sunday drivers" that use the left lane because there are no other cars around. I feel safer doing 200kmph in most European highways than doing 120 in North America
@JaapNL-55

In the US it is 'keep your lane', but in the European continent the rule is: keep right, and only go left to pass. So you will never be surprised by someone passing on your right... well, that the theory. The fact is that too much drivers always keep the middel lane when driving on a 3 lane highway, or even worse, drive left at low speed. The law tells us not to pass on the right... well, sometimes you'll have to do it, just to tell the slow driver 'GO RIGHT'. Sometimes they even wake up 😜

There are rules on which route the speed must be reduced by how much. If there is no speed limit on a route, the first sign is 130 km/h, then 100 km/h, and then 80 km/h or 70 km/h. You see, you are asked to reduce the speed by 30 to 20 km/h. A speed camera usually comes about 100 m behind the speed sign.

The public toilets where you have to pay 50 cents are usually where there is a cleaner all the time who takes care of the toilet paper, the toilets themselves are clean and the floor is clean, and soap etc. is always there. You pay more for it than for the use itself or the cleaning staff does not get the 50 cents from the restaurant. But there are also enough public toilets where you don't have to pay and are usually clean

Restaurants are open on Sundays though. And you can also go shopping on a Saturday without it being too crowded, just go in the evenings & not when all the families go. :) We also have public toilets that are free (dirty and clean ones lol), most of them (especially in train stations & gas stops along the Autobahn) are run by private businesses & they charge for the service (they're usually pretty clean). In places where you're a guest or customer (restaurant, cinema, concert hall...) it's free of charge. Btw the people working in all of these bathrooms usually get shitty wages so a tip is considered polite (please tip them if you can).

#1 Sunday is rest day in Germany since the 1891 amendment to the Trade, Commerce and Industry Regulation Act (which was part of Bismarck's social reforms intended to stop the rise of the social democrat party). It became constitutional law in the 1919 constitution ("Sunday and public holidays are legally protected days of rest and of spiritual edification."), and that article was adopted by the current constitution. Nevertheless there are laws which allow certain exemptions. The states can specify, how many times per year towns and cities can allow the opening of stores at Sunday (therefore the dates differ from town to town). Restaurants and cafés are generally open at Sundays, they can set their rest day at another day. Most bakeries are open in the morning, but close at midday (and are in most cases also closed in Saturday afternoon). The Saturday run on shops is heavy in discounter shops, not so much in other shops. #2 The "blitzers" (radar speed traps, called after the red flash "Blitzer") are triggered if you about 10% over the limit. Most Autobahn routes do not cross through any settlements, but if you came near to settlements, there will be noise protections measures including speed limits (mostly 120 kph, sometimes 100 kph). There are strict speed limits in Germany, as long as you are not at the Autobahn or a road marked as expressway (max 50 kph within towns, max 100 kph at federal highways and other overland roads, if there are no signs indicating another speed limit) - and that includes multi-lane roads which are not explicitly marked as being part of the Autobahn/Expressway system. There is no place where the limit drops directly from 120 kph to 30 kph - even at roadwork sites you'll have stepped speed limits, going e.g. from 120 to 90 to 60 to 30 as you approach the site. By the way: You are not allowed to use an expressway or the Autobahn if your vehicle's max speed does not exceed 60 kph. #3 The bathrooms along the Autobahn (and along the highways in many other European countries) are operated by private companies who want to be paid for their services. A few decades ago there were still many public bathrooms (in the cities) you could use for free, but since cleaning up after you is costly, in most municipalities you have to pay now (as well as in bigger railway stations), at least 50ct or so. In some cases men are still able to use the urinal for free (because it is not in a closable compartment), but this is coming rapidly to an end. The advantage of this system is: The bathrooms you have to pay for are in most cases very much cleaner as the few you have yet not to pay for. (And peeing in the street is an offence!) #4 Air condition is also not very energy efficient in most cases. And it can cause health issues if it is hot outside and the air condition is adjusted to nearly freezing... ;) But the real reason why German houses do not have air condition is simply an economic one: it would only be useful for up to two months, and that makes the investment to costly for most thrifty Germans. And because the market is so small and the regulations are so great, there are not many competitors, so the prices stay high. #5 The left-most lane is only for overtaking, no matter how fast you are, not for cruising. And it is strongly forbidden to overtake on the right lane - at any multi-lane road.

Greetings and Love from Köln/Cologne, Germany again. I would say the two main reasons why Germany doesn't have air conditioners are: 1: AC's are harmful to the environment. 2: They are energy guzzlers. And electricity is expensive here in Germany. Electricity is on average 174 percent more expensive in Germany than in the rest of the world. Consumers in this country have to pay 31.80 cents per kilowatt hour - the international average is 11.62 cents.

The restrooms on the Autobahn mostly cost 0,5-1,0 Euro or so and you get a coupon as a receipt you can save or re-use immediatly to buy stuff at a big network of supporting gasstations and stores... and for that you get very clean toilets. I think thats fair. And its not like these toilets are super secure federal prisons. If its an emergency ( dirrhea or whatever ) you just yeet over the turn-steel and go do your business. Also, aircondition isnt really needed in our climate. Its more a luxury-item. its expensive and not environmentally friendly so most people dont bother. Even if temps hit 110+ ( which is rare, a very hot summer ranges between 95-105 fahrenheit in germany, and only lasts for a few weeks with such extreme heat ) most of us just prefer to complain until its over and cool ourselves off differently.

Everything exaggerated and no look from both sides - that is a little bit ignorant. Sunday and holidays are for family and recreation and that is very cool and a real slow-downer for society which in these days we all can use. You had the not just bikes video on groceryshopping in the netherland and there you can see why Germans don't need a certain free day to go shopping then, because shopping is not such big of a deal and grocery stores are in the same areas where you live... Blitzers in Germany starts 8 km/h above the speedlimit to take a picture (in town that means 50 is the limit and Blitzers will catch you for driving 58 or more). There are regulations in Germany for the slowdown process espacially on Autobahn, a construction side will be announced some 3-5 km ahead (2-4miles). and speedsign are tiered from e.g. 100 to 70 to 50 km/h - you will never slam the brakes to hard to avoid a ticket. Price will not go up only if you ignore the pay-day. Paid toilettes are usualy cleaner and the personnel in Germany cleaning them are paid fairly, so there is a reason. Restaurant and many stores have free bathrooms for customer. On the highwaystops, you got to pay e.g. 70 cent and get a coupon for 50 cent to use at an immediate buy or for another stop - they almsost all use the same system... Air conditioning are environmental nightmares and will cost you a decent amount of money in Germany with our higher electricity costs. Houses in europe are usually well isolated and won't heat up that much if you take some steps to keep the inside cool. In my apartment the temperature will not go over 77 Fahrenheit even if it is over 100 on the outside, when i ventilate the apartment in the morning and keep the windows and blinds shut... Yeah the left lane is for passing and after you past one you return to the right, it is not just for high speed overtaking, but in general you are required to drive on the most right lane possible if you are not overtaking anybody. And never never never never never overtake on the right side on the autobahn - that is really dangerous

Let me say this... They are exaggerating a little of course to make all more interesting. 😀 Yes, stores are closed, but you get basic things at gasstations, at trainstations, airports... Bakeries are open on Sunday mornings in cities, Restaurants are open. AC more than 1 % have. 😀 - A lot of people, especially those, who rent a home, have what we call a mobile AC unit. House owners get themselves AC too since summers are getting warmer here. German houses are a lot better insulated therefore apartments don't heat up as an American house does without AC. We also have "Rollläden"... like shutters to protect the windows from outside. We close all at 7 am and roll them up in the evening after sunset, then we keep the windows open all night until the morning, when it's time to close all to keep the heat out. 😉 This normally is sufficient enough as long as you have Rollläden and your house is well insulated. 🙂 Now to the restrooms... We're talking about public restrooms, which no German uses. - When I need to go, I go into a Cafe or restaurant and ask for their restroom, because there it's free. I can't even remember when I paid for it, you just git to know where to go and ask nicely. 😊 I also used the toilet in a store, when it's necessary. Nobody has to pee behind a house or in a bush.

But in contrast to things like shops being closed, or paying for the bathroom, which are just inconveniences... this is a matter of rules and laws, and you should always make sure to be informed about the general rules of a country you are visiting or living in. On the Autobahn, there is the so-called "Rechtsfahrgebot" - the rule that you have to drive on the right-most lane, if possible. The left lanes are for overtaking only. Passing on the right is not allowed. This rule is not to be interpreted too strictly: you don't have to return to the right after every single car you passed. It is allowed to stay on the left lanes, if you do know that you will pass another car again in the next moments... and, more important, if you don't obstruct other drivers. That's why the comment of "the left lane is only for the really fast cars" has a bit of validity. If you could driving on the left lane, and someone faster approaches you from behind, and you CAN switch to the right lane... you are obstructing them. And considering that there may not be a speed limit where you are driving... cars can approach VERY QUICKLY. So, stay on the right as much as you can. (And, as with all laws, there are a few exceptions, in the case of traffic jams or very slow moving traffic.)

Dependind where in Germany you are, the need of AC is seldom. I live in the northwest and days with more than 27°C (81°F) are rare. Some summers are warmer and when you live directly under the roof, you're screwed. The years 2019 and 2020 were unusual warm/hot with a heat record at 40°C (104°F). I seriously considered to move temporarly into my parents basement. But mostly it"s ok, if you open the windows as soon as the sun sets. Additional enegy is expensive in comparison to the USA. We, 2 adults, pay about 50€ per month for electricity without AC.

Maybe just not go over the speed limit. if you cant obay the rules of the road you litrally should not own a car. Some small change for a clean bathroom is fine, and its not nearly always mandatory, its requested. And this is only for public bathrooms outside restaurants or public service buildings. AC is nice to have if its realy hot, but good practice for airflow in your house can negate the need for it if the house has good insulation, open doors and windows at night when it gets cool (or just some windows) let cool air in, and keep doors and windows closed during the hot day. Generally inside temperatuers will not go over 22C. The danger of an AC is., if you have it you will start to rely on it and use it when you dont actually need it. As for driving on left, I find it funny that Americans dont learn to switch to a right lane when possible. Keep roads orderly and drive right, only move left as far as you need to to pass whomever your behind.. and lets face it, that should only be trucks or folks with trailers that cant drive a normal speed limit. Ofc the german autobahn does not have a speed limit :) And Passing on right is actually illegal in most countries here, and lets face it it makes sence to do so (if its left or right doesnt matter for those that drive on the other side)

And as a civillian you can just get a gun with some licenes and just a 9mm Pistol . If you want a bigger gun you need more Licenses . 🇩🇪 ist safe af

Germany doesnt really need AC's unlike the southern parts of Europe since the climate is different. We in the South would die during summer without AC's ...Germany doesnt have or the North doesnt have summers like we in the South do, although the last 2-3 years were even rough for Germany when it comes to temperature. When I used to live in Germany the summers were nice but neveeeeer tooo hot unlike here in my home country Croatia were summer sometimes starts already in May and lasts till October.... and if its all the time over 30 °C an AC's is only a lifesaver. Although people say it aint the enviromentally friendliest thing - I personally cant live during the summer without it.

Just like Holland only we have speed limits and the shops are open on Sundays
@adpop750
@adpop750 3 жыл бұрын
1) shops are more often open on Sundays here too. And it's IMO not a good thing: A) It messes up the work-private life balance for people working in shops B) It's kinda ruining social gatherings and events taking place on days that no one has to work, now someone always has to work. So all join the rat-race because some people think it's inconvenient to plan ahead having 1 day of food. 2) Yes speed cameras, automated fines, we're used to that. Then again what's the problem going not over the speed limit at busy parts near cities, when on rest of the Autobahn you can go as fast as you want? 3) paying some change at a restroom, to have a clean and well maintained restroom? I only see the upside. 4) it's not that hot here, maybe it's a little warm in July-August. But that's it, so why have Air-conditioning? I really don't get the obsession Americans have with it, why do you need it in a cool already climate? 90% of the year max. temperatures stay below 75℉ 5) keep right is one of the most basic traffic law principles in Germany and in Europe generally (not the UK, they drive on the left). And yes on the no speed-limit Autobahn lots of people go over 125Mph or even 200mph is not unheard of. Keep to the right, overtake on the left and use your mirrors even if you go 135Mph, you're not the fastest, people still are overtaking you.

. Not weird, shops are closed on sundays, because Germany is Christian nation. (Genesis 2:2) Ps. It was like this in the Netherlands too, but not anymore. But... there are holidays some shops are closed the whole holiday (in the Netherlands too)! And not weird you have to pay €.50 cents for a clean toilet. Do you prefer it free but dirty??? And air-conditioning can spread➜[legionella(☣️)].
