Yep college is a scam in this modern generation. After highschool people should work different jobs see what they like figure out who they are and what they want to do before committing to such a financial burden. 40k debt with no job offers after wasting 5 years of ur life is setting ur future self up for failure or for a slowed down process to success. Kids work and don’t follow what society or teachers or ur parents are telling you. Work make money become financially secure then explore college.

@@BattleOfficial_ in my opinon a degree in the UK is borderline worthless. Only a handful of degrees like medicine , engineering , computer science have any real value) I have a biomedical science degree and about 2 years working as a scientist, I made £27,000 a year in my last job and I made more then most people from my university who graduated when I graduated. I went to a good Russell group university but to be honest university rankings really don't mean alot. Job progression in science is fairly slow from where I am. I know people with PHDs who have taken jobs paying less then £30,000. I'm currently applying for trainie engineer jobs which has nothing to do with my current degree because there is more money in it and better progression. 27k might not sound bad but after making it I've come to realise that if you're not living with your parents it leggit goes nowhere, I had like £200 a month spare and that was living really cheaply. At that rate I would never be able to get a house myself. Occasionally I see warehouse jobs paying more then my last job as a clinical scientist. Also my degree was more useful then like 70% of degrees.

@@epic1053 oof that's rough man (or girl, don't want to misgender 🥴) but yeah as you said it's only worth for certain ones. This is exactly why I didn’t go straight to college. Several of my really good friends went to fairly prestigious schools, arrived and when they realized they were truly on their own for the first time in their lives, started partying and putting minimum (often zero) effort into their studies. They didn’t figure out what they wanted to focus on and spent ~70k a year of their parents money, only to return with a general education they could have gotten in a community college. Education about the education system needs to be promoted and made more blunt for high school kids.

Yeah, especially if the field you're going into isn't going to pay you enough to afford it. Even my sister, who plans to become a nuerosurgeon, made money her first priority in choosing a college because she knew she'd need to save for med school. People treat college like a second childhood and put themselves in sox figure debt for a Journalism or a Sociology degree. The college I go to is fairly expensive (I'm here on scholarship), and it's anxiety inducing to watch people drop 40k per year on an Education degree. I'm going into Cybersecurity and I wouldn't dream of spending that much...

@OMEGALUL Clap the primary reason why many countries can afford free tuition is two fold: 1) the restrictions to attending university are much much MUCH higher. In the US, basically everyone goes to university because the gov. - stupidly - writes a blank loan to dumb 18 year olds. In many European countries, the way it works is basically "OK it's free... if you essentially score the equivalent of a 1300 on the US sat. Everyone else gtfo of here" And 2) even THEN, those tuition costs are HEAVILY subsidized by the US effectively bolstering many European militaries. I 100% think we should exit NATO and leave the EU to develop their own international military coalition. But then they would have to make some SERIOUS budget considerations and i guarantee you the "free" tuition, in its current state at least, would dissolve.

@OMEGALUL Clap Anytime you put 'free' next to something you are in principle making it worthless. Making education free will saturate the education system with morons that don't even want to be there in the first place; the "I might as well do it" bunch. And trust me, even with undergraduate school being this expensive you still have a lot of those. Many people also take out loans to join fraternities while they are breezing through a degree that will land them a high school teaching job at best so give me a fucking break here. I graduated with 25k in debt, a degree in chemical engineering and into an 80k/year job right out of college. Would I do that again? Absolutely yes.

@OMEGALUL Clap And as for everyone's right to get quality education, I absolutely agree with you. There are basically entire degrees and immense amounts of educational content in platforms like KZbin and LinkedIn learning. If you don't want to pay for the learning structure that a typical university gives you then please help yourself into this and become the best version of yourself. I fully support that.

Taking more than four years now very normal with how busy and fast paced everyday life has become (and of course with the COVID pandemic). The financial aspect of it is absolutely not fun. If it’s still in one’s price range, starting out at a community college is great for those that are unsure of what to do. I ended up changing my major my second year while I was still there before moving on to a university. I have an AA, am working on my BA while my partner (who started at a local state college) is now about to work on his doctorates in one of the most prestigious grad programs in the country (He’s humble, but I’m extremely proud of him, so I hope this doesn’t read as bragging. I’m very excited). It saves tens of thousands of dollars and is likely still a very quality education. I still believe community college has more value for its buck over local state schools, but it really depends on the individual! For my area, cc had more consistent quality professors/lectures than the local state college, but it varies!

I just learned how to double major off of KZbin and tbh, I think ima do it. My depart is Business Administration so it’ll be an AS in Accounting and an AA in Economics. Both degrees have many of the same class requirements like Economics 1&2 , Business Law, Accounting 1&2, etc. then the other classes like history and art would count for both degrees. I think it would worth it because looking at the accounting degree, I’d be learning finance and other skills that are offered as a certificate of achievement. The economics side I think would broaden my job opportunities. Business administration is already a broadened degree in itself and I think I’ll have an easier time picking my consent ration for my BS. I honestly don’t even know if I want to transfer to a 4 year after my AA and most jobs in this field require a Bachelors. I think this will give me a competitive edge when trying to get a job and help me pay off whatever debts I accumulate. My school has internship program and all.

And if you don’t it’s ok, don’t just take general ed. go toward the general field that you think you’ll be, for example, if you know that you want to major in sciences but doesn’t know, then take math classes. or if you’re good at smth that’s also a good sign (you may not like it but at least you’re less stress taking smth you like or good at, rather than tackle smth that’s difficult and don’t like. And ofcourse required/prequisite classes

This is why my biggest advice to people that don't know what they want to do in college is to just wait. College will always be there, but if you spend lots of money on a degree or program you have no interest in doing, you're only hurting yourself in the long run. Take your time, find a simple job hiring, figure out your hobbies and what you enjoy doing most then see if the school you wanna go to offers a program you want. The last thing anyone wants is crippling debt, a useless degree and/or time wasted

The last bit is honestly the best advice. Go to a community college or take a year to really think about it and plan out your end game goal before spending money or taking a loan on something you'll have to spend years paying back for.
