But yet also don't punish enough I graduated high school, and didn't do ANYTHING all 4 years. Passed tests through barely paying attention in class. I'd be told all the time that there would be consequences for not doing any work and yet my MOM would typically do the punishing which did NOT help my mental health. But that's cause she HAD to since the schools did literally nothing in response. If schools did any kind of effective punishment (who knows what that even looks like though) then maybe we'd see some improvements But what does a good, productive punishment really entail? How does that look on a student to student basis? Idk man

I never went to kindergarten because my grandma didn't want me to for some reason) I did make friends in school, but I mostly got isolated and pushed away because I was different from just about everyone else and it left a lasting impact on me. I just realized fairly recently that that experience created trauma for me, and that I was also bullied. I'm not sure why it only recently clicked, though, maybe it was some kind of defense mechanism or something. Also, I don't buy into the idea that you can't criticize an imperfect system just because it did/does _some_ things right. If I can't have a good grade on a difficult assignment because I don't feel safe even asking my teacher a clarifying question, that goes completely against the education system. When you learn, you're supposed to feel encouraged to clarify things with your teachers, and ask if you can do X or if I was suppose to do Y or print Z. The thing is you bring up very valid points. Such as school not teaching very important things that everyone will use at least once. And the school system is obviously at fault for many other things too, but the actual knowledge that you learn from school is invaluable to people who want to succeed in certain career paths. Lots of people tend to say that school teaches you things you will never need to use, but in reality some higher paying technical jobs do require you to know lots of those seemingly random facts to be done correctly. If you want to get involved with mechanical engineering or architecture there is lots of difficult math and stuff like trigonometry and graphs. It really matters what you want to do with your knowledge which is why I perfectly understand why it’s not for everyone, but I wish more people would realize that the knowledge school teaches you isn’t useless it just has to be applied properly to real world situations in order to make sense and that’s where a college education comes in.

Homework shouldn’t exist, unless it’s a project or assignment that actually requires you to go externally to research, gather resources or interview people, or anything you can’t do directly in school, but at least people would be engaged and more motivated than boring revision. At least projects do give useful soft skills you will certainly use in your career.

One of my teachers was really good at teaching and I was able to actually learn the subject material. However, most of the class did not especially because the class was so “easy” that they were on their phones all day. Here’s the thing, one of the other teachers that taught the same class, taught in such a way I couldn’t understand the subject material. That class was more engaged. I don’t get it. It’s like one teacher actually liked to be there making what he taught easy to learn even if it was a snooze fest, while the other teacher was the opposite.
