Ittoqqortoormiit must be the most remote village on earth, with it's nearest neighbouring village 800 kilometres away. It was founded in 1925 to provide better hunting for the new settlers, but also to assert Danish territorial claims over NE Greenland. Norway, whose trappers had been in NE Greenland for many years, also claimed the territory.
North of Ittoqqortoormiit is the Nort-East Greenland National Park, the largest national park in the world. In the early twentieth century trappers, built small huts throughout the area for winter trapping of Arctic Fox and other animals, all for their fur. Today the area is totally uninhabited, apart from personnel meteorological stations and the Danish Armed Forces surveillance unit, the elite Sirius Patrol. The only people who have regular access to the area are sealers and whalers from Ittoqqortoormiit.
The Sirius patrol has a base on Ella Island. The main building on Ella Island is "The Eagles Nest", built by Lauge Koch in 1931. It became the base for the war-time "Sledge Patrol". This and other huts are frequently raided by hungry polar bears • Polar Bear intrusion a...
Large numbers of Musk Oxen thrive in the area and can be seen in this video on Ella Island. The scenes here were shot at the end of October 2022, as winter was settling in.
