Nice build, nice video! What I liked the most is how you used that cardboard layout of the motherboard to plan and pre-route the cables, that was a great idea! I'm copying the hack in my next build! The Terra is a gorgeous case and the way you build on it makes justice to that beauty.

I like the idea of putting a cardboard motherboard map in the case to figure out cable management before the actual motherboard is in. I did a similar thing but just with the PDF manual a day or two before my motherboard got delivered, really paid off with routing and cable tying all the fan cables, PSU cables, and front I/O.

I have one and it's super easy to work in! Do bit of warning though: the vented side panels create high pitched whooshing noise once your fans ramp up. It's not an issue with lower end builds, but I had a rx6700 in it for a while and the sound was pretty loud. (Gamers nexus has a pretty good deep dive on the issue)

Hey @kanedaprime. I have a Ryzen 5600x with an Alpenfohn Blackridge, paired with BQ Silent wings 4 pro. I also struggled with the GPU width and ended up buying a 6700xt Challenger from Asrock which is 45mm only. I'm planning to upgrade later where I'll will downsize the topflow fan to a Noctua 12x15 as the BQ is an overkill. With this change I can fit a 55mm card easily. Whenever you plan to add a new card / cooler, the math is simple. You have 120mm total clearance, where you can divide space for the card and for the cpu cooler. Hope this helps and cool vid bro!

My only criticism would be the purchase of a 4060 Ti - especially the 8gb variant. 8gb is already proving to not be enough VRAM for some AAA games, especially when trying to stack DLSS and RTX features, and the phenomenon is only going to get more common as time goes on. For the money (~$400) I would have recommended a used RTX 3080 10gb - possibly a 12gb variant if the price was right. For similar (thought admittedly oftentimes better) performance but with some cost savings, I would have recommended a used RX 6700 XT for ~$200. Both options have more VRAM and don't run into the occasional memory bus width issue that the 4060 series is somewhat plagued with. All that being said, thanks for filming the process. It was nice to see the Fractal Terra being built in without a ton of tech-tuber review baggage. The bit at 17:30 gave me a good laugh!

Glad you liked the video. I knew that the 4060 ti 8 GB is not one of the most popular GPUs 😉. But I have to say that it is more than sufficient for my needs. I'm not the "newest AAA game" type anyway. I usually buy games when they are on sale. With AAA titles, this usually means that they are already 3-4 years old. Also has the advantage that they are usually well patched by then. 😊 For me personally, the additional price of the 16 GB version was not in relation to the added value. I don't play with ultra textures and I'm sticking with 1080p for now. I have a lot of fun playing games with this GPU. I also think it's a shame that the industry has almost managed to make it seem "normal" for many consumers to spend 600 - 800 on a graphics card. My own rule of thumb: I don't spend more on the graphics card than the price of a current gen game console.

@@KanedaPrime Having read your replies explaining your gaming needs, I think the biggest "mismatch" is the budget and performance targets. I've personally just ordered parts, including the same case, for a £1400 build that should absolutely destroy 1440p ultra and even stretch to 4K ultra on some titles (admittedly I got a used 7900GRE ~£100 under new price). The mini-ITX route does make the baseline cost quite high, but I still think with your gaming target this build should not have gone past 1300-1400 euros.

If you flip the bottom fan to exhaust, it should improve your overall temps
@KanedaPrime
@KanedaPrime Жыл бұрын
I'm not so sure about that. If I ever should have cold hands while playing, I just hold them over the case ;-) The airflow bypasses the rear part of the GPU and the warm air is transported upwards very well. I don't think there is much space for the air to escape from underneath the case. As warm air is lighter and rises upwards, it could flow back into the housing. Well... at least in my theory.

A nice selection of components you have in mind. I have to admit that I'm a bit of a Gigabyte fan. I've never had any problems with Gigabyte products and have always had good experiences. Good documentation, fast and long support for BIOS updates, never an RMA or DOA case (which I can't say for Asus), no "hidden revisions". Everything about this motherboard looks and feels high quality, and I'm absolutely happy with it. I think the ASUS ROG Strix B760-I is also a good motherboard. Great video, but would not recommend pairing a 14600k with a nh-l9x65, the cpu is 125w and can reach 181w during max turbo, the l9x65 is a great low profile air cooler but i wouldn't use it with anything beyond 90w (and 90w is a stretch already), do not believe in Noctua's "compatibility list" and proprietary "thermal dissipation score" i did the same mistake with a 12600k, and had to order a 120mm aio instead (i'm using an old CM Elite 120 case), at the beginning i thought it was due to the small clearance between the fan and the power supply (it was a tight fit) but after a open air test i kept hitting 100c (Tjuction, Thermal throttling) in Cinebench, and hitting the high 70's, low 80's while gaming, now with the AIO Cinebench peak temp is 70c and never goes beyond 50c while gaming. If there is a perfect use for a 120 AIO this is it.

Have you seen my follow-up video? I already expected the CPU to get too toasty and set power limits plus undervolted the CPU. So i have sacrificed a tiny bit of performance for better temperatures. Your estimation is pretty good. Below 95W the maximum temperatures were in a healthy range in Cinebench. I also find Noctua’s “NSPR” rating a bit shady. But at least it helps to compare the Noctua coolers with each other.

I'm not that "newest AAA game" player anyway. The most obvious thing i could have done with the buget would have been to do without the second ssd and use a 4070. But i love the luxury of having so much storage space I could have saved a little on the first SSD. The Lexar 4TB as second SSD was already one of the best performance/price deal i could find. But for me it was more important to save a bit on the GPU because it will probably be replaced sooner than all the other components.

I also want to build a PC like this. However, since the cost of food in Korea is so high, I would save up about $100 a month to buy it.

I wonder if I could do the same build with an i7 CPU and not have problems with overheating? And whether it would perform well for video editing and rendering?
@KanedaPrime
@KanedaPrime 11 ай бұрын
As you may have seen in my follow up video, I have set power limits and the CPU is undervolted. so I sacrificed a little performance for healthier temperatures. For me that's absolutely ok and I expected it. According to the Noctua compatibility list, the cooler should be ok for an i7, but I think it's better to use a slightly larger cooler for video editing and rendering

how was the thermals ??? what was the max CPU and GPU temperature ?
@KanedaPrime
@KanedaPrime Жыл бұрын
The GPU has a maximum of 65 - 66 °C (stock settings). It gets a little complicated with the CPU :-) Short Version: I am currently running it with a power limit of 95W (PL1 and PL2) and under heavy load like cinebench it reaches around 84 °C. I haven't done any fine-tuning jet but I'm happy with it for now.

Outstanding build broham! Its been a month, how's your little Frankenstein holding up? I would like to know! Really setting my mind into building my own little monster (first timer, total noob 🤫) and i really like your choices in components. Nothing flashy, Im not a gamer. But after all my adult life (I'm 50) using the same old pre fabricated PCs, I'm ready to build my own. Your advice would be very much appreciated! The phanteks evolv shift xt case is what i want to use. 🤔 Thanks for your input! 👍🤘

Thanks mate! Even after a month, I am more than satisfied with my system. Utility, performance and aesthetics are exactly as I intended. Building your own PC is not only fun, but you also have a system tailored to your own requirements. The Phanteks Evolv Shift XT has an interesting concept due to its flexible size. When it comes to recommendations, I can't say too much other than "Take your time". Think about your individual requirements, do some research and plan your build. Take your time also during the building process and it will turn out fine. I believe that there is no such thing as "the one ultimate PC". Have fun and good luck with your build!

can you used the Fractal Design Terra as a case for external GBU?
@KanedaPrime
@KanedaPrime 11 ай бұрын
i'm not that knowledgeable about "DIY eGPUs". But i think it will be difficult to mount the Board / PCB (if you can even find one). Also in terms of cost and size, you will probably be better off with a "ready to go" external graphics enclosure (e.g. Razer Core X, Cooler Master MasterCase EG200,...)

Would there have been space still for another fan on the top side of the case?
@KanedaPrime
@KanedaPrime Жыл бұрын
Not really. On the side where the motherboard and riser cable are located, you have almost 0 free space. And above the power supply unit, the plug is in the way. You could turn the power supply around so that the plug is on the other side. but even then you hardly have room for a fan. I don't think you need one there. The lower fan blows wonderfully warm air upwards.

Can this cpu cooler fits if I install a rtx 3090 fe ? And are temps manageable ?
@KanedaPrime
@KanedaPrime 11 ай бұрын
Hi. With this CPU cooler the RTX 3090 founders edition would not fit. As far as i can see, the dimensions of the 3090 FE are 336 mm x 140 mm x 61 mm right? it would fit in the case but you would only have 48mm left for the cpu cooler. With Powerlimits an a bit of undervolting the temps are fine. If you like you can watch my follow-up video about it.

What is the purpose of using another socket holder? Contact frame ?
@KanedaPrime
@KanedaPrime 11 ай бұрын
The LGA1700 socket, which Intel introduced with the 12th generation of their Core CPUs is known to have problems with bending hardware. The contact frame (should) prevent this and (should) help decrease the CPU temperature.

Nice build. That 4060 Ti is only 41mm, you could have used spine position 1 and had more room for a better cooler. I have a 42mm GPU in my Terra and am cooling a 13600kf with a Big Shuriken 3, works well. Both the Thermalright AXP120-X67 and the Deepcool AN600 would fit and they are both better than the BS3 and all 3 are better than the NH-L9x65. Since you already have it I would replace the fan with a Noctua NF-A9 PWM, either brown or chromax.
@KanedaPrime
@KanedaPrime Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the hints. I wanted to leave room for a 2.5 slot GPU (approx. 50mm), which I originally had in mind. The NF-A9 PWM would be a genuine option. i just need to find out how to get the right mounting brackets?!?

@@KanedaPrime Hello, you installed two ssd Samsung SSD 990 PRO 1TB, M.2 , and the second , Lexar NM790 4TB, M2 why not Samsung ? Is Lexar good or Samsung?
@KanedaPrime
@KanedaPrime Жыл бұрын
@@reshad711 Hi. in general, the Samsung 990 pro has the better "reputation" and has excellent performance. First and foremost, I opted for the Lexar as my second SSD for budgetary reasons. The 990 PRO as 4TB cost around 340€, the Lexar NM790 4TB around 200€. In my opinion The Lexar NM790 4TB is a excellent "Bang for the buck" PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. As second SSD it stores mostly almost my entire game libraries and more than "good enough" for this purpose 🙂
