This amazing mv is directed by Uhm Tae-Hwa, who directed Concrete Utopia (arguably the best Korean film this past year) which takes place in Seoul after a massive earthquake and survivors are fighting to gain the few remaining residences inside one building. He's talked bout the meaning of some of the symbols: The "Cube" - while on one level its an alien device/ship, it also represents descrimination against IU and V's characters (she's deaf, he's blind in one eye) - it can be interpreted as various kinds of discrimination and oppression in our daily lives. The camcorder - The scenes in the camcorder represent the world before the present time when the world wasn't ruined. In a way, the lens of the camcorder represents a filter of love - it allows us to see beautiful things beyond the internal and external aspects of the characters. The world is beautiful and organized, unlike the chaos of the real world. The main characters - Even though they are damaged, in the video the two only have each other to rely on until the very end. The tuxedo and wedding dress they chose to wear from the pile of clothes: They symbolize the "fruit of love". They express their happiness while wearing them, up until the end. While the ending is sad, it's also happy. Once they float away in the final scene, it also represents that they have gained freedom from all kinds of oppression and repression. The tuxedo and wedding dress, which is all that remains, raise the question whether they actually represent our essence. The pile of clothes obviously is a call back to BTS' Spring Day - both videos are referencing a 2010 artwork called No Man's Land by French artist Christian Boltanski - he in turn is referencing the Holocaust, where Jews about to enter the gas chamber would disrobe and their clothes would be placed in a large pile - the only reminder of them. Btw, Um Tae-Hwa worked with IU in 2018 on the VCR for her 10th anniversary concert for the DLWLRMA World Tour. IU saw his film Concrete Utopia and reached out to him to direct this MV.

There are so many layers of story telling and metaphors and the director has explained what the storyline is. It’s a beautiful way for him to convey the message. In addition to this one part of my interpretation is based on the fact that Tae is blind in one eye and has burn scars around that eye. You can see at the beginning he is looking vulnerable, fragile and afraid. IU is leading him and is protective throughout. My interpretation is that he had encountered the cube before and narrowly escaped being captured and so is going through all the emotions from it. At the end, you see IU trying to protective him by picking up the metal bar because (to me) she knows what he went through and wants to protect him. And Tae taking the bar and attacking the cube looks to me like he knows what the cube is capable of and despite his fear of it, he wants to protect her. At the end it didn’t work and you can see the cube glow red with heat and smoke coming off their bodies (burn marks around his eyes). The ending was so poignant. The song was amazing and felt more epic because of the storyline and visuals. They have great chemistry, first with the amazing duet they did on IU’s Palette and now with their acting skills, not to mention their interactions as friends. It’s so good to see Tae being able to express his acting skills even in a 5minute short. I hope he starts doing movies on his return. This movie really makes everyone feel emotional and they did that with their facial expressions, truly stunning. IU is queen for a reason and Tae our idol of idols never disappoints in his unique take on life and the choices he makes, whether to make an album of music he likes or to act in a short film all choices with a sad, emotionally moving ending. He wants his artistry to move us emotionally rather than hit the top spots on charts. Love these two artists. It’s time to stop calling this kpop.

I agree 100% on your take. Tae is so fragile in this, as though he's been broken from a prior encounter with the cube. I love that he protects her in the end, and we can see him mustering his strength before he strikes. The whole MV is beautiful and sad. It's so well conceived and executed. I am so proud of Tae for his acting, so proud of both of them. And IU's voice is phenomenal. Simply beautiful.

A few things you may have missed. This is one of the theory. There are many others too :- 1) IU is deaf/mute and V is blind in one eye. IU uses sign language in the dinner table if you notice. 2) The cube represents the society which discriminates against people having disabilities thus eliminating them. 3) However Love truly wins all. IU and V stayed together because of their true love. 4) The camrecorder shows how the world would have been if the society didn't discriminate against them. 5) They would have get married happily. If you see the scene where IU was singing in the mic and Tae puts a flower on her ear, the people in the back were pointing fingers at them. 6) The whole mv was mainly shown from the pov of IU. You can see how she always put herself in the danger first and tries to protect Tae, how tenderly she loved him, her touches were so gentle as she saw his normal eye through the cam. But Tae loved her too. At the end of their life, he puts himself in front and tried to break the box. Tae was not your alpha male. They both are equally scared but when time comes, they can sacrifice themselves for the other. This is true love. 7) The three taps on Tae's chest at the end of the mv where Jieun was hugging him from behind indicates i love you in sign language. ANOTHER THEORY - The cube represents inevitable death. IU and V remember their memories when they were younger through the cam recorder. How happy they were. They run away from death, wanting to spend more time with each other but at the end, they can't run away from death. It's bound to happen.

I will add my opinion to interpret the ending as a more hopeful message. Cube is the prejudice of this society. Cube is a prejudice against minorities or socially disadvantaged people, such as homosexuals and the disabled. Even though the world is covered with cubes of hate, the cubes do not clump together, but are each alone. On the other hand, IU and v stood by each other until the end in the face of the prejudice of a cold and angular society. It can be considered a failure that only their clothes are left. But they stayed together until the end, and finally they were freed from prejudice. In the end, love wins all.

The feeling of desperation in the beginning, the gradients of Blue & Grey created a parallel to the feeling of the song that V composed for BTS. The realization of this gave me chills. The saturation through the lens during the happy times. It was beautifully done! IU’s vocals created that sense of longing, love, & desperation. The way her voice crescendos & undulates! The pile of clothes reminds me of BTS "Spring Day". So this is a story about people coping with tragedy. (Whether accidents, illness, death, war, etc.) And when it happens in your life, how they're facing it together. They reminice. Then when they tossed the video tapes - I feel like they were deciding to enjoy their present moment together.... And in the end, that she only covered his non-blind eye at the end 😭. She cared for & was fully thinking of HIM at the end. (Like she didn't do the typical thing to instinctually cover both eyes. Because she was attuned to him. And him her, to grip her hand.)

I love the details of the clothes all over the place. not a lot of people made it as far as they did. it was their love for each other that kept them alive. the message of oppression towards disabled people and humanity in general is made so crystal clear. the cube wiping out imperfections but in turn creating a cold and empty world without love. Tae being blind in one eye with IU covering his good eye at the end so he doesn't have to see death, and IU being mute/deaf but singing at her wedding service to her love. (she also squeezed Tae's chest 3x which means 'I love you'). I love how she is the one leading him through the beginning and at the end he finally had the courage to protect her even if it took his life.

The Box represents society, it is chasing every individual who doesn't fit the standards of society. Here V is half blind, IU is deaf and mute. So they are running from oppression of society. The world is controled by these standards of perfection to the point that people in South Korea put masks on outside when they don't have make-up on or when they feel unsecure or they wear hats when their hair is just messy. The MV is a dysopian view of our society. While they are trying to hide in this abondonned place filled with the clothes of people who died previously because of this oppression, they find a camera that allows them to have an illusion of what their lives could be if they were "normal" by society's standards, it starts with their looks, they could see how they would have looked like, then what they would eat, then we can see through the lens of the camera they're using after V eats that cake, we see that they are immersed in this illusion to the point the room is filled with people, but as it is an illusion people don't have faces, they would just party and beautifully imagine that IU could sing and V could sing as well and she could listen to his voice, they could marry each other and just have fun and eat whatever they want because they wouldn't have to care about society or any other kind of oppression. However, as soon as they feel a little bit of confort and try to live their life, the Box (society) finds them again and push them to retreat again, they try to survive against it and try to fight it again as hard as they can, but they cannot beat a stronger system, they just give up, but at least they stayed together until the end. Even if they died, they loved each other deeply. It shows that even if society is oppressive, people can love each other and they can find their soulmate even if they are not "normal or perfect" to the eyes of some many others. The pile of clothes is like from BTS's MV Spring Day, these people died because of injustice, but they deserved love, so the pile of clothes can look very gloomy and sad, but as in Spring Day MV if you don't forget them you can seem them happy and free where they are right now...

Loved the mini movie mv....that scene with V hitting the box it sorta reminds me of "I need you" video the part where V stabbed his abusive father. The same intense look. But this got me teary eyed 😢. They did a Amazing job.

Here's everything you might have missed: 1) IU is deaf/mute and V is blind in one eye. IU uses sign language in the dinner table. 2) The cube (the director said it is called "nemo") represents the society which discriminates against people having disabilities or those who are simply different (often considered as misfits) thus eliminating them. (the pile of clothes: The pile of clothes also reminds you of BTS "Spring day"MV which also features it) 3) However Love truly wins all. IU and V stayed together because of their true love. 3) The camrecorder shows how the world would have been if the society didn't discriminate against them. They would have get married happily. If you see the scene where IU was singing in the mic and Tae puts a flower on her ear, the people in the back were pointing fingers at them. 4) The scene where they are at the restaurant and the scene where she is on stage singing in her wedding dress, you can see how the people around covered in black are all pointing their fingers at Tae and IU (represents how harshly the world judges them especially in their happy moments) 5) The whole mv was mainly shown from the pov of IU. You can see how she always put herself in the danger first and tries to protect Tae, how tenderly she loved him, her touches were so gentle as she saw his normal eye through the cam. But Tae loved her too. At the end of their life, he puts himself in front and tried to break the box. They both are equally scared but when time comes, they can sacrifice themselves for the other. This is true love. 6) IU taps three times during the scene where he grabs her hand tightly which translates to "I love you" in sign language.
