I feel like the problem with making list of the greatest rappers of all time is that people often have completely different ideas on how a rapper should be judged. You have people who will judge an artist based on their impact and influence on the overall genre of hip hop and then others who will only judge them soley based on their lyricism and poetry. Yes you can have rappers who are able to fit into both of these categories but it honestly just ends up undermining the legacy of many rappers because they dont necessarily fit into one these specific categories over another
@Glockkie3 ай бұрын
imo the greatest rapper of all time should be your favourite rapper. cause i know a lot of people that don't like future, thug or chief keef so where's the argument then? music is subjective, numbers don't mean anything and influence don't always mean a good impact on the genre so the only way to determine who the greatest is... is to name your favourite rapper
@Saint_Kaiser3 ай бұрын
@@GlockkieI would say the word Great hold the connotation of who has the most influence. I would say that how you are describing “Great” would fit closer to the word “Best”
@Glockkie3 ай бұрын
@@Saint_Kaiser yeah but for example project pat has a lot of influence and I never see him in the goat conversation... same thing with yung lean, spaceghostpurrp, lil b... would you call carti the greatest artist of the 2020s just because of his influence?
@Saint_Kaiser3 ай бұрын
@@Glockkie I would say influence on a global scale, not just in the game. Otherwise Rakim would be the goat. Normally what I do is look at other instances where people use “Great”. An example, Mohammed Ali isn’t the most influence boxer “in” the sport, but probably holds the most renounced boxer ever. He also isn’t the best boxer ever. You can also look at MJ, although being the best of his time, it’s really hard to compare NBA players through time, not to mention he probably was on the best team ever. Also, this is all subjective. I just crafted my definition around how I see other people use “goat” and “best”. Not to mention I really started to consider this to argue Drake to be the goat

On Future vs 50 Cent: Future is like a slow burn artist, he never oversaturates the market with his music or image, he doesnt do interviews, he never attempts a no1 hit single or a viral trend. He allows his reach to slowly expand through word of mouth and the way people talk about him as an influential, respectable and hard working artist. 50 Cent on the other hand came in with a blockbuster story in 2003 and let the whole world know about it. He got huge amounts of money and publicity, forcing everybody to learn about his background, but only 4 years later people became tired of him and moved on to new things (Kanye). This is because 50 came in like a storm and got all up in people's faces. It's not sustainable and it exposed him to people who are not even fans of rap, earning him a army of haters as well as fans. Future chose a very sustainable approach with the way he marketed himself, never "selling out" (selling outside one's main demographic). Fans of hip hop know and respect Future because they see him here and there, and non-hip hop fans might not even have a clue about Future
@AllTheArtsy3 ай бұрын
the conversation between "best rapper" is nebulous because what "rapper" means has evolved so much. i think theres a more fruitful conversation if you talk about "best emcee" and "best artist" with emcee being more focused on lyrical and technical content of the raps and the skill of spitting bars, versus the musical and technical composition of the music, production, arrangement, mixing, sampling, etc. (which some if not most rappers do not have skill on and fall squarely on producers and engineers) Future and Kanye both can make argument for best and most influencial hiphop artist, but neither has any claim on best emcee

Yo I understand what you mean but I really feel a lot of the influence you’re contributing to Future can also be attributed to Young Thug as well. I personally think Thugs influence is maybe a bit more noticeable due to a lot it coming from how artist use their voice. I don’t know if you remember but the “baby voice” comes directly from Thug so many Artist experimenting with their voice is allowed now because of Thug. There couldn’t be a Carti or a Yeat without him. As far as influence goes I think the way hip hop sounds now and has sounded for the past 10 years can be directly traced back to these 3 people Future, Young Thug, and Travis Scott. Future for the way he structures songs and flows Thug for his experimental vocal inflections and unorthodox harmonies and Travis for his production style moody psychedelic sound and harmonizing as well. And the glue between all these artist is Metro Booming btw.

I really want some one to make a hip hop family tree video tracing the influence from Wayne, Kanye, and T-pain to how hip hop music sounds now. I’ve been a fan of hip hop since I could remember and I think if you took 2008 and wiped it from the history books music would sound completely different. I’m 25 and I’ve been watching Hip hop evolve pretty much since then and I find it so interesting. I might just have to make that video myself bruh because I don’t feel like anyone gets it right.
