IV Fluids | Intravenous fluids |Crystalloids | Isotonic, Hypotonic & Hypertonic solutions
Intravenous fluids are used in intravenous therapy to restore normal fluid volume and maintain electrolyte balance when the oral route is not possible.
IV fluids are either crystalloids or colloids.
A crystalloid solution can be isotonic, hypotonic, or hypertonic.
Colloids are always hypertonic.
Isotonic
0.9% Normal Saline (0.9% NaCl),
Lactated Ringer’s Solution (LR),
5% Dextrose in Water (D5W),
Hypertonic
3% Sodium Chloride (3% NaCl)
Hypotonic
0.45% Sodium Chloride (0.45% NaCl)
