With William Kapell and Sergei Babayan, Ivan Moravec is one of the three pianists who have influenced me the most. I've heard them all in person, though I was too young when I heard Kapell to know what I was witnessing. (But his recordings are stupendous.) Moravec was known for his impeccable taste, his ability to assume just the right style whether he was playing Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Ravel--whoever--his rich tone and tonal palette, his perfect legato, and his ability to make the piano sound like a hammerless instrument. Perhaps more than any piece, this one demonstrates his technical prowess, in the ordinary sense of that term. I've read that he practiced pieces at greater speeds than he would ever perform them. Hearing this makes that sound impossible; yet I believe it. He was a perfectionist. He wanted to make the piano, a percussive instrument, sound like bel canto singing. He'd show up in a venue a day or more early with his tools and work on the piano he was to play until he had it sounding the way he wanted. I'm not enough of a historian to know if anybody ever had his level of genius married to his level of mastery and musicianship. In the recording era, maybe Rachmaninoff. Maybe the ones I've named already. Maybe Godowsky or Lhevinne. (Each reader will have preferences, I'm sure.) They are rare, and each one is unique.

WOW! Breathtaking! Ivan Moravec was a versatile and great pianist! His recordings of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Ravel and much more prove it. 🤩😍 Happy 2024, ADGO! 🍀🍾❤

Ivan Moravec seems to be an underrated pianist. I (sadly) used to have a recording of him playing Debussy, including Images 1. I hope to get that again. In my opinion, a superb performance, as this performance of Beethoven is. Thank you very much for posting this.

For some reason he's still underrated but he's hugely appreciated among pianists and avid listeners. Also there are far too few live recordings of him (which I'm trying to correct)).

@@ADGO In the Supraphon box set of his recordings, on the extra DVD there is an Appassionata with video, as well as some concerto live performances. Is it sharable on KZbin?

I don't know. I wouldn't share it because it's a commercial release that's still available. @@ZbynekPilbauer

I heard him play this live in Prague's Rudolfinum in 2011. He had an exceptionally full tone, great use of pedal, and some kind of a distinct aura which I have witnessed only at a handful of piano recitals. At that concert he also played Bach Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, Debussy Pour le piano, Chopin Polonaise-Fantasy, E minor Nocturne and B flat minor Scherzo. He was then in greater control than at his last recital in 2012, of which some is on KZbin with video.

Where was this photo taken? It sort of looks like Jascha Spivakovsky’s practice room!
