Note: This video is reuploaded since the original got blocked. I criticized Ivan Rakitic a lot earlier this season, and I believe rightfully so. But there's no denying that pretty much ever since, he's been terrific. Definitely one of Barça's best players during the second half of the season, and also very much a key player for Croatia at the World Cup.

That's because valverde was playing 4-4-2 with him at right-mid, and in that position you do need pace...rakitic is not a pacey player but he is very good at passing and is a very technical player!

He sacrifices a lot for barca, he's playing different role. Remember that rakitic is attacking midfielder before he comes to barca. But he's now one of the best holding midfielder in the world, he's still learning from busi tho.

I think one of his most important aspects that doesn't really translate into these highlights videos is that he's a vertiable iron man. He played so many minutes of football. Tirelessly working for his teams. Some segments of the Barcelona fanbase criticize him for not being as visionary or a passing maestro compared to the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, or Busquets, but Rakitić brings something else to the team: Hard work, calmness, stability, and security. Oh and of course a terrific volley or long-range shot here and there.

Whether its a back or a front or side pass, I hardly see him misplacing a pass...he almost always gives an accurate pass and his crossing is also good...very much underrated though

After seeing the world cup, I came to the conclusion he must be the new Barcelona captain. Everyone giving all the credit to Modric, when he missed a lot of short and easy passes, while Rakitic was killing it doing amazing passes from side to side of the field and inventing some amazing thorugh passes. He was the true Ballon d'Or of the World cup, and the best thing is that he doesn't even care about not winning it.

Karsten Brunt I agree with you on the penaltis. Although I must say that after seeing Tottenham - Barcelona I understood why Rakitic doesn't get that much credit, and that's because of his irregularity. His first 15-20 minutes were terrible and could have put Barcelona in a really bad situation. He was gifting the ball to Lamela and Kane in the 1st quarter of the field ALL the time. Even a few minutes after the goal he missed some easy passes which could have ended in a Tottenham goal

Maybe not a typical Barca style player, but as we can't have that deadly midfield of Xavi-Iniesta-Busquets again, he really gived us some new things in the midfield, a strong, balancing and hardworking midfielder, playing so many games last season but still keep running until the last minutes of World Cup Final. I'm not always a Rakitic fan but I have to say that without him Busquets will suffer a lot. No matter he will be a sub or a starter in the coming season, I think he will still be an important player for Barca.

This season saw the improvement of Rakitic as Valverde gave the team more stability therefore Rakitic didn’t have to improvise as much. But compared to today he is not only a lot slower and lethargic but he cannot play well in a team that is devoid of structure like we are now. Truth is that Rakitic can be a great squad player in the right setup as he was in 2014/2015 but now he is useless and isn’t good enough for any team that actually wants to play with the ball.

As much as you're not wrong; I think we've benefited from having him in the team. If we can't defend we're screwed and Rakitic provides a lot of pressure against teams. He's been a fantastic all round CM. Great passing as well which is the best attribute for a CM at counter attacking football.
