The thing I like about Ivar is that according to what the Norse considered ethical, he's the most moral and virtuous of Ragnar's sons. After all, he's fighting to avenge his murdered mother and take back the crown from a woman who has no legitimate claim to it. Unlike his brothers, he has fathered no illegitimate children and has not committed quasi-incest, nor has he disgraced himself as his brother Sigurd has, and he would sooner break a bone than a promise. Furthermore, the reason why he appears to lack empathy is because he's never been shown much empathy, nor were empathy and mercy considered virtues in Norse society. In short, he's not what we today would consider a hero, but he's a drengir to the core of his little black heart!

I think she wasn’t afraid of him dying literally as opposed the innocence that she adored had to pass and King Ivar would take his place accordingly, that’s what she feared most it’s uplifting but a sad burden for a mother to know

No, not really. He was born deformed. Then once, Ivar has one line about possibly breaking a bone but it is never otherwise brought up. He also undergoes a lot of physical trauma (falls and drops and such) without ever breaking a bone or worrying about it.

It is supposed to be Osteogenesis Imperfecta, but people that have the disease have looked over the show and it does not match very well with the symptoms shown, so it could be supposed to be Spina Bifida or smth. That's just to my knowledge. And the Saga Ivar may have been double-jointed, or just unable to get it up, or actually paralyzed waist-down or smth but again, to my knowledge, it is not clear.
