Somebody should use this piece to accompany images from the Hubble or the James Webb telescopes. The combination would be amazing!

I recently saw an orchestra use this as a lead-in to Holst's The Planets, which featured images from satellites, probes, landers, etc. of the various planets. For this piece, the image was of the night sky from some canyon or other where there wasn't a lot of light pollution. I love Hubble images too, but this music combined with a sky full of stars and a sliver of the Milky Way was extraordinary.

Like a lot of Ives' music, this is sometimes conducted by multiple conductors, because it is written in different time signatures, at different tempi for different sections of the orchestra. They opted to only use one conductor and have the players take care of it. So it may look like the first flute is just rocking out, but he's really conducting his section with his body, which is necessary for them to be together in this particular piece.

The cameras never found the solo trumpet. It is supposed to he some place off the stage, as are4 the strings. The most effective I've heard was with the strings playing invisibly in the wings, the trumpet sitting half-way up the center aisle in the audience, and only the flutes on stage. The conductor was with the strings, the trumpet was on his own, and I conducted the flutes Only once have I seen it followed by "Central Park in the Dark", which Ives made clear in his published program notes, was an answer to the "Unanswered Qjuestion". One year when Masur was Music Director with the NYPhilharmonic, he did the "Unanswered Question" to open the concert, followed it with Beethoven's 9th. This was in the Cathedral (?) of St. John the Divine in Manhattan. He also used the American Boychoir as part of the chorus to achieve a unique clarity in some passages.

Ives's composition is quite brilliant and inspiring. I knew his name and composition on the national radio broadcast. I also love to listen to rock and roll music like Irish rock band U2. I noticed that the opening synthesizer introduction to their hit tune "Where the streets have no name" is close to this. The sounding is very modern and fresh for me.

All i can think about while listening to this deeply cerebral piece is how many "answers" humanity has come up to try to answer the question that the trumpet poses, why are we here. Religion, God, money, power, spiritual assention, heaven, hell, nothing, everything are all equally valid to believe but none are really the truth, the truth really is that there is no truth and life is whatever u decide its about.

He is leading his section. They are not in tempo with the strings, they have their own tempo. It's meant to be done with multiple conductors, but the solution they use here is for the section to be un-conducted. The tempo has to come from somewhere, so that is what the principal flute is doing. He's not being a show-off, he's not making it all about him, he's not being arrogant! He is keeping his section in time, as a good leader should in this scenario. Want everyone in the orchestra to be still? Then use a second conductor and take that pressure off the principal flute. But it's not his fault the management chose not to do that.
