You are right, I was not a fan of le gibet when I wrote this comment, but now I think that the three movements of the piece are equally divine. Ravel may not be my favorite composer, but Gaspard de la Nuit is for me the best piece ever written.

This is by far the most nuanced and perfect version of Gaspard I have heard. He truly understands what is going on in this piece and artfully goes from pianissimo to fortissimo adding much more dimension to the work than other interpretations I have heard. I wish the recording quality was better, however.

Was in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh last night as well (Sat, 29 Aug 09). Loved it. The whole program: Chopin, Liszt, Sibelius, Ravel - it was all played with brilliant artistry - the technique is phenominal. It was a privelege to be there - not sure why adience did not clap and stamp their feet longer - an encore would have been great! But all good Edinburgh denizens scuttled off to their buses home to Morningside as soon as was politely possible! Plus ca change!

Amazing how many overtly analytical "musicians" seem incapable of feeling this piece.. it has more soul than a mere display of technical affluence.. I sometimes wonder whether these critics have ever truly felt as opposed to "understood" the music they critique.. 2:26 - 3:49 sent shivers up my spine, cooled my cheeks to a frost and forced my hairs to stand to attention Breathtaking...

Wow, what an energetic performance, and very accurate technique! I need to hear more Pogorelich. This piece itself is also amazing. I love the almost vertical position that the hands have to be in to execute some of those crossover parts. The pianist must look diabolical in order to play such diabolical-sounding music!

I adore Ivo. And I've viewed this specific video recording, posted by others, many, many times. This video has been sped up unfortunately. But was still interesting and a little amusing to listen to. At the correct speed this performance is indeed otherworldly. In my opinion, this performance of all 3 movements of Gaspard is the greatest piano performance of all time. Love you Ivo!!

This amazing piece certainly has a harsh and alienated quality to it, but I love how Pogorelich brings out its equal and opposite strange liquid quality too. The waters are maybe violent, but they have a mysterious softness too. I think Gaspard de la Nuit is one of the finest piano pieces ever and Pogorelich brings it alive like no other.

You can't play this piece with a sober head. This is about conjuring a demon. Actually the only thing you can really enjoy about Scarbo is the battle that the pianist has to fight. In terms of that, i think this piece is the most challenging of all. And who cares about what is in the sheet? The only thing what matters is the sounds that emerge in the end. Nothing more and nothing less.

I was hoping that somebody was going to send a comment on the Edinburgh's concert promptly- so nice you, and mrsRogue below, told us about it. The same programme (except Sibelius) was performed a month ago in Porec/Croatia and my impressions were identical. As there is a series of live concerts that Pogorelich recently performed with convincing artistry in Strassbourg, Hamburg, Kotor/Montenegro, Porec/Croatia, Edinburgh it seems that Ivo is in a top form, ready to share with us his visions.

Indeed we are all entitled to have our own opinion. Especially when it comes to something as subjective as music. You are also right that we usually go for the "big" names missing some brilliant performances by other underestimated artists. That's the reason why i listened to Egerton-Smith's performance. Cheers =)

4:14 How big must one’s hands be to play an octave like this?
@lisilisin5 жыл бұрын
I would say it's not a question of hands size, but of the capacity of overture and flexibility. As an example, listen to these live performances by Alicia de Larrocha. One is "Gaspard de la nuit" complete (1980): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHe9ZotjaN-hnNk - and this one, only Scarbo (1968) at Carnegie Hall: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKXdeJKOjrGqZ8k
@Shadow94Wolf11 жыл бұрын
I agree with Tanner. Reason why i don't like performing French modern pieces like these is that they have no lyrical melody applied to iit and the sounds are very.. unusual but pretty in a sense. Reflective of past impressionistic composers like Debussy.
@JureGorucan15 жыл бұрын
islamey is bytheway still harder, i had more problems with learning it than scarbo.
@gojewla7 жыл бұрын
I didn't. I think Islamey is pretty much a cinch if you just have decent octaves for the coda. The difficulties involved with Scarbo are generally much more untraditional, varied and complex. Plus it's longer, and who wants to just learn scarbo, and not ondine and gibet? Also, there are many many great performances of gaspard, and it's such a well known piece that it's more difficult to rise to the general standard that is expected these days in the public mind. It's an issue that one would like to ignore, but generally shouldn't if they are a serious performer and want a career. I am sure that even Argerich or Pogorelich feel at least some pressure when they first learned this piece. I guess it ultimately comes down to the performer. Everyone finds difficulties in different places, but I think that objectively speaking, most people will find Scarbo to be harder than Islamey.
@djsessum14 жыл бұрын
Amazing performance, but listening to it you have to wonder just what the composer was thinking when he wrote this. .-.
