When I met Ivor Cutler in the early 70s he gave me one of the two best pieces of advice I've ever had: that life is better if you wear pretty socks. I have endeavoured to do so ever since.

Wonderful man, I used to live near him in Camden in the early nineties. He once came up to me, on the towpath, and warmly congratulated me for clearing up after my dog. He said he normally wouldn't, but given she was a great dane, he thought it best to appreciate my effort. He was lovely, very easily irritated, but lovely.

He was a teacher at my school, Fox primary school in Notting Hill between mid 60's to 1974 where he taught drama. He had an amazingly creative spirit. Occasionally he'd sit at the piano during our dinner hour and play and sing. Something about Saturday night rings a bell. In his deer stalker hat and non conforming ways i cannot see any school allowing past the front door these days, which is such a shame. One of a kind Andy Mullins

Well said, Bruckner, I totally agree. For me, his eccentric Scottishness always added to the fun. And how bizarre, but strangely satisfying, to hear him providing THE ecstatic musical climax to Robert Wyatt's amazing album "Rock Bottom". An unforgettable moment. Sadly missed.

I just discovered this guy, and I am an instant fan. I note the other disparate comments and would add that it's o.k. not to "get it." Part of the charm for me is that I KNOW not everybody and his dog will "get it." But to me, it's funny and delightful. I'm going right now to see what else this guy has posted.

A good freind of mine had the honour of having this man as an art teacher. The freind in question is now well into his sixties, and was nicely influenced by Cutler. He certainly had a great outlook , and that rubbed off on his pupils .

@rabbitpi Dear Rabbit, Thank you. No, I'm serious- your comment is a needed bit of redirection. Actually, I'd completely forgotten I'd posted here. But the real epiphany for me- that is, the realization that your advice is spot on- is that when the video came on, I had no memory of it whatsoever. Of course, I knew who Ivor Cutler was- I watched this in the first place for him- but the song was completely unfamiliar, which showed how overcome I'd been by a poster's political comments.

I'm happy to be uplifted to a shop in the sky - where we can all get all we want - for instance - to find a magic dust that one can sprinkle over all war torn and disaster areas and alleviate the misery of the suffering endured by its people, particularly the plight of the Japanese right now. Libya fighting for the one chance of being liberated from a monstrous regime. Palestine, whose voice is has been deafened by Israeli belief that its rights are above the rights of others, its neighbours.-
