Just to help give some non spoiler context, Atlas did die between this flashback and pilot and his death in the comic is a main point of mystery. Mordecai left Lackadaisy soon after Atlas’s death due to unknown reasons (read comic) and is hired by Mr. Sweet at Marigold, a rival speakeasy, who’s seen at the end of the pilot. His history with Lackadaisy is the reason why he doesn’t shoot Ivy in the pilot.

Atlas is the guy that the lady talks to in her office but she talks about him in a way that kind of sounds like he’s not alive anymore so maybe something happened to him while they were doing “the work”

PLEASE REACT TO THE LACKADAISY Comics dubs!! There so good and I think you'll ladies would enjoy them a lot. Also Ivy Dad Ruben helped out Atlas a lot with the Lackadaisy speakeasy if ya'll get what I mean. But for real you gals need to see more of the comic dubs videos from the lackadaisy channel!!

I know you mentioned that it's been a long time since you read the comic, so I'm going to offer you a mini-spoiler that opens up a whole new depth of poignancy to Viktor's interaction with Ivy, below: It was revealed in the webcomic that Viktor actually has an estranged wife and daughter somewhere. Thus the way he initially warms to Ivy, then suddenly pushes her away.
