Specifically, the parts where you show how to determine the KDP sizes, trim, bleed, margins, etc., and how to format your Canva project accordingly, how to format the cover properly with KDP's cover calculator, and how to upload the whole thing properly -- these things are GOLD-NUGGETS of information on areas that could be tricky and hard to figure out. I was so overwhelmed and intimidated by the process when I first set out to start publishing coloring books a few months ago... UNTIL I found your video. I usually don't comment but feel like I need to do so today. I had set a target to publish a book on Amazon KDP for over 18 months but made no traction. Initially, I feared it might not measure up, and then I was concerned about where to start. Your video, along with the one where you created the square book, was all I needed to get started. The booking-making was a family affair (My 3 girls and I). It took us three days, but we have successfully published my first book. Thank you so much for your video and information, Ivy! I had to watch it more than once to make sure I had all the information. I had a few difficulties because I used microsoft designer to help with the illustrations. When I tried to upload to KDP the file was not pdf. It took several tries to convert my files but I was successful. It also takes practice to input the correct information in Microsoft designer to generate the the image you have in mind. The problem with making a coloring book this way is that the images will be quite inconsistent, with different thickness of the lines and them being quite different in style, which is never desirable, because chances are the buyers won't be happy about it. And another thing, the cover should only include the animals that are used within the interior, not just random animals, people expect the cover to depict what's actually inside the book.

That’s a really great point and would definitely recommend using one method or the other as opposed to mixing both (I wanted to show both methods for tutorial purposes so mixed them up in my video). However you are right that it would be best to make sure the lines are consistent from a thickness perspective:). The other way is on chat gpt to instead of saying black and bold lines you can say thin black lines to match the type of images you find on canva. Thank you for your comment!

I just created and listed my first Amazon colouring book. I will admit that I had the same thoughts. In the listing I do add a note saying that only the white sample images are in the book. I also thought about how there are a few different art styles which I'm not super fond of either, will add a note about that too. End of the day it was still a great helpful 101 tutorial to help get us started! I look forward to designing my very own hand drawn colouring books later this year. Wanted to get the practicalities out of the way first and just get started! There's so much to learn where passive income is concerned but it's also so much fun! 😀

The closest thing would be 8.5 x11". Hopefully that would work for your coloring book too. Thank you for your kind support! Regarding your question- no the margins i showed in my video for the interior pages will not show up at printing. They are only visible when we are working on the draft version within canva. Once you export them to pdf print they would no longer be there. The cover template however will remain visible if you don’t cover it up completely with other elements. So best to make sure you cover completely or you remove the template layer before exporting. In my case for the video, I just made sure it was completely covered by the background element. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I love the way you explain things. Before watching it, I was ready to have someone format my books. Quick question regarding bleeds and margins. I chose with bleed. Do I need to keep everything inside of the margins? I noticed only your "this book belongs to" page has elements outside the margins. Thanks again!

Thank you for your kind comment and great question. If you chose with bleed, then I would say your background elements or unimportant elements can go beyond the margins. However, I will still keep all critical elements (like words, or main images) within the margins so they don't risk being cut off. Hope this helps!

Hi Ivy, thank you so much for this wonderfully detailed and helpful video. I'm just wondering, the drawings that Chat GPT has generated for me need some tidying up - things like a few wonky or greyed out lines. Do you know a way to do this? I have tried with both photoshop and also Illustrator however it doesn't seem to be a vector file that I can edit. Do you have any advice on this? I'm concerned that using the illustrations as is isn't the best quality. Thanks.

Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question, why didn't you use or indicate how to get consistent art style? I know as an artist and consumer, I expect if I buy a coloring book the art would be consistent. I wouldn't expect to get Stan Lee's style on some pages and Aaron McGruder's on others. Do you have any recommendations for consistency?

Thanks for your comment and questions:). I agree with you that when publishing we should always try to achieve a consistent style. In my video you will see some different styles because I was trying to show different methods of creating the colouring pages (ie canva vs ChatGPT). The best way to achieve consistency is not to mix methods like I did in the video :) if you keep your prompts consistent on ChatGPT (ie thick bold lines, or thin lines etc) you will generally generate very consistent style images if you generate them all within one session. For Canva method you will just need to be a bit more patient to sort through and find graphic elements that are of a consistent style. Hope this helps!

Thanks for an awesome tutorial, really helpful! My question - what happens after you hit publish? Amazon will print it and ship it out to the customer? In which case, who is responsible for complaints around shipping? Or Is this book only available on kindle? Like only an online copy, so when people buy it, they have to print it themselves? Otherwise how will kids color?

Thank you for your kind comment! :) Regarding your question, KDP is a print on demand services, so once you hit publish it will be available on Amazon for customers to purchase. Nothing gets printed until someone purchases your book though. When someone purchases, then Amazon will help you print and ship the book to your customers. Any customer returns or complaints on shipping will be handled by Amazon directly. Amazon will charge you for printing / shipping which will be subtracted from your book's sale price. The difference would be what you get to keep in royalties $. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video :). If you are publishing paperbacks on kdp there is currently no requirement for exclusivity which means you are allowed to also sell on other marketplaces.

Thank you for watching my videos and supporting my channel! Regarding your question, I believe it is due to where you have added your blank pages. Just make sure your odd numbered pages (i.e. 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) are the ones with the coloring book elements, and the even numbered pages (i.e. 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) are blank pages. Make sure you go and check and fix that in canva and then re-download the PDF file to upload to KDP and that should fix this issue. Hope that helps!

Regarding your question - when you generate your cover, you need to use the KDP Cover Generator link here: kdp.amazon.com/cover-calculator. 8.5 x 8.5 is what you would enter into the calculator, but the actual cover dimension you enter into Canva would be dependent on the outcome of what the cover template tells you (which would be larger because it takes into account both the front cover, back cover, book spine as well as margins). Hope this helps!
