Hi Ivy, so glad you are doing this again. I am ashamed to say I do not ride as much as I would like. Partly because my horse gets real hot once I'm in the saddle. It all starts the second I try to mount him. He will not stand still. He did at one time, but won't anymore. If I try to have him stand, even for a second, he gets mad and that sets the tone for riding. He tosses his head, spins, backs up, he has even tried to buck. So not riding has also produced another problem, he is buddy sore, with my cow! I'm using an egg bit. He is a 17 year old TWH. Any advice how to start out the new year would be helpful.

I am so happy to have discovered you!! I have trained bred and shown Arabians for 50 years!! However, no I ride and train my gaited horses just for pleasure. My first question, what color would you call the mare that is in foal in your introductory video? I recently rescued a registered MFT and he is that exact same coloring but on his registration he is called "black". Granted he is a little darker perhaps than your mare but he is NOT black. Having been an Arab person I would have registered him as a liver chestnut. What say you? and again, thank you! How would you rate the Mylar bit that has the same mouthpiece profile as your favorite bit but a different ring/configuration?

Michel Strickland she might have missed your question, but I noticed that they discussed this question in the comments about the video on The Rockin s snaffle that she uses. If you haven't found that already you could scroll up in the comments on this one and get the link.

what snaffle bits do you use? I have a dogbone egg butt snaffle with copper roller I am wanting to train my Tennesee Walking Horse/Standardbred mix with. He is very soft to the bit but I am struggling to get him to gait on a loose rein.

Thank you, Ivy. I love your training methods and philosophy. I have a TWH gelding who I would like to teach to canter. He will sometimes gallop which leaves all of my friends in the dust. Do you have any hints or videos that I could buy that would help me with this?

I love cantering gaited horses! I have this video download available for training a gaited horse to canter: shop.ivyshorses.com/Intro-to-Cantering-the-Gaited-Horse-Instant-Download-canter-download-video.htm

Thanks! I just downloaded it and am excited to try out your technique. What canter cue do you suggest for gaited horses? I have heard people say to use the outside rein and outside leg but it looks as though you are using the inside. I have always used inside for walk/trot/canter horses.
@IvyS

I use inside rein and outside leg back, but early on, I will use both legs so they understand I am asking for them to really go forward. :)
@IvyS

I use outside leg back, inside leg at the girth, inside rein slightly raised, and look toward the outside.

Ivy, what can I do to get my MFT to lower his head? He's pacey.

Kenneth Halleck some of her other videos discuss this, and since I have a similar problem with a nervous paso fino / TW I'm about to train, I am looking for this also; so if I find it I'll try to get back here and give you the link.
