I believe he said in a recent live stream that the song was written from his mom’s perspective talking about when he left home to be a singer. The grief that a parent feels after their babies grow up and don’t need them anymore. But he didn’t want to explain that because he wanted the song to fit whatever story we envisioned. The folks watching the stream had to practically pry it out of him.

Honestly, I had to stop the song and go away the first time I heard this. I just started sobbing. I've been a widow for 13 years now and this just hit a little to close to my heart. You managed to put into words exactly how I feel. My best friend died January 7th, 2022 and my grandma died one week later on January 14th, 2022. This was the hardest thing I have ever gotten through. I wasn't able to mourn or process their deaths because I had to keep pushing. My university, my degree, my classes didn't stop just because my world stopped. I still haven't properly processed their deaths and it's been almost 2 years now. However, this song hit hard. Thank you for putting into words that which I couldn't. Thank you, Sammy. Thank you for reminding me that I am not the only one with loss and that I am not alone. I love you always and forever.

Knowing he wrote this for his mother makes the song even sadder to me. I know he wants to keep the song more open ended meaning wise so that anyone can relate to it in the way they seem fit but I love his meaning so much. Watching your child grow up and not need you anymore is such a specific grief that isn't touched on much in art and I'm happy he shared what he envisioned the song to mean. I love songs that fit into so many scenarios.
