Must say both USA and Canada have bad coffeel but USA is MUCH worse! Amount of times we had to throw away the coffee because of how bad it was. Tasts like a teaspoon of coffee mixed with 1L of water! Also starbucks is incredibly overrated. Here in NZ gas station coffee is sooo much better and half the price

I have been to high end Dutch coffee 'manufacturer' Blanche Dael in the city of Maastricht. What they told me is that Starbucks is literally the worst coffee you can drink in the Netherlands. The beans are of the cheapest kind and they are roasted way too long, so drinking them without loads of milk or sugar is not even a possibility. The owner of Blanche Dael let me taste some of their coffee and oh boy that tasted great, and I don't even like coffee! They told me: if you need to add a lot of stuff to make it taste nice, the coffee on its own is very bad. I completely agree!

I'm Australian and i visited a friend who lives in New Jersey a few years ago now. He used to brew me a pot of coffee every morning knowing how much i love coffee. Ughhh... the worst coffee I've ever had. Burnt, strong and bitter and the after taste was nasty. I even tried the coffee in the cafes and restaurants and it was all similar. I couldn't wait to get home to just get a decent cup of coffee. But of course my American friends just tell me that i don't know what a decent cup of coffee is as a response .. i just stay quiet and let them believe that.

American coffee, from what my friends have told me after visiting, is burnt and bitter with an emphasis on "hot" somehow meaning good. I had starbucks once and it landed in the bin after the 2nd sip. I tried coffee in various cities throughout the USA, including highly rated specialty coffee shop in San Francisco in a hipster part of town and the difference with theirs and the rest was it wasn’t as sugary, however very weak tasting, bland and watery. It wasn’t till I arrived in New York (Manhattan) and found Bluestone Coffee a chain owned and run by Aussies throughout the city that I finally had a decent (Australian style) coffee. I feel the specialists are missing the point that the way the milk is heated, steamed and added is also important, which is such a big part of the various types of coffees popular throughout Australia.

Starbucks owned if for a brief time to get more dutch in to their stores and failed as every one makes their own coffee and every company has their own D.E coffee machines . A really good coffee machine is a big part of making a tasty cup. Here in southern Sydney there are many local cafes which make great coffee, but you generally notice the best tasting ones come from the big, fancy machines which cost thousands of dollars. Those who buy such machines for their business also tend to buy the best quality coffee beans. Combination of good beans in a good machine and made by an expert barista gives the best cup of coffee.

The thing is with the local roasters/baristas over in the States is that they are probably catching up on the point Australian local roasters/baristas were at 35-40 years ago. The ‘third wave’ they refer to in the video happened in Oz decades ago, so when Starbucks showed up here the Australian palate had moved well past what they were offering.

@@ariadnepyanfar1048 it still took about 40 years for it to spread through the country. As a kid growing up in Brisbane in the 70’s and 80’s coffee shops were pretty rare outside the city and inner suburbs. Most people still drank tea. Brisbane received much smaller numbers of migrants from Mediterranean countries than the other Australian state capitals, so it took a lot longer for the cafe scene to take off. It wasn’t until the coffee club started spreading into the suburbs in the early ‘90’s that it started to accelerate. Once you left SEQ, the rest of the state was still mostly a coffee desert until the last 20 years or so.

The best coffee doesn’t come from the chains. It’s those hole in the wall cafes . They tend to care about making and using the best coffee. As an Aussie I have to admit this morning desperately wanting coffee but it was too early for my usual hole in the wall coffee. I had to start at 5 am and the only coffee I could get was Starbucks. Literally it triggered me. I battled through it but didn’t enjoy it but I was desperate for a fluffy coffee heart starter - as I call it. The bitter taste lingered for hours - even drinking water couldn’t get rid of the bitterness. That company definitely knows how to spoil coffee.

Buy yourself a coffee grinder, a single cup filter holder and some beans of your choice. If you can't get it from your regular hole in the wall, make it yourself. It takes all off a couple minutes to make. I'll admit it's touch to make a cup of BLACK coffee that has a good taste. Any smidge of bitterness explodes right into your mouth with coffee. There's only a handful of coffee brands that actually slides down your throat like silk all the way without a bitter aftertaste. I personal prefer a strong cappuccino because that tastes OK even if the coffee is less good.

@@paulmichaelfreedman8334 I am going to disagree with your suggestion of a single cup drip filter. Espresso coffee is worlds apart from drip filter, even with the same source coffee, there is much to the method. I mean, when pressed and at work or something, I'll drink draino if it had caffeine in it, but drip does not come close to espresso. Even a single cup french press would do better coffee than a single cup drip.

Unfortunately the Banksters are passing off DEBT instruments as money - and it is legal for them to do so - but not for anyone else. Good luck ow-win as they say in Wales.

As one of the most prized arabica coffees in the world here in Espirito Santo(Brazil), the difference between massive industrialized coffee and the one we bought direct from small farms in the countryside is simply huge. I've tasted coffee in the U.S. & Canada and can confirm that North Americans don't know what they are missing out on. The only coffee that was on par with what we can get in Aus was from a café in New York run by a couple of Aussies. Here's the skinny on why Aussie coffee went from tasting like sh1t to tasting like it should. Post WW2 we had a large migration of people from Europe. They tasted our coffee and said 'Aussie coffee tastes like sh1t!!!!". They then set about importing the expresso machines and organising quality beans. It was initially done to satisfy their fellow countryman's desire for good coffee. It then spread throughout the country when everyone tasted what coffee should be. A very important point that was missed in this video was the importance of quality training for baristas. An untrained person cannot deliver a palatable coffee even from the very best coffee beans.

Hey man, I'm from Portugal living in Warsaw, Poland and when I moved here almost 3 years ago, the first thing I noticed was how bad the coffee here is, and expensive too. I mean, in Portugal we drink coffee in a similar way to Italy, espresso is the rule to almost everyone, and almost everywhere you can find a joint with an espresso machine and decent quality coffee. On the other side in Poland the coffee is served in a more "American" way... Latte, huge sized coffee cups, and it doesn't taste good. Kind of like dirty water after washing potatoes, acidic taste and terribly expensive. An espresso in Portugal won't cost more than 1€ and that's pushing, while in Warsaw the same will cost you the equivalent to 2,5 / 3€, but the worst coffee I had was in the Netherlands...

If I had to describe everything to someone that knew nothing about Australia in 5 minutes, I would play them this song. It describes so much more than what the words say and has a deeper meaning. The one thing that stands out about it so much is how it makes you feel, that sense of belonging and mateship. How Aussies embrace other people, cultures and welcome them with open arms. I just love this country so much and think many will appreciate his reaction. I follow other channels too and almost all have reacted to it so maybe he does not have to be that concerned. She'll be right mate, react to it ha ha

What I've found interesting in the talk about the likes of Starbucks etc is that they say you have a selection of coffee available, but it is only one blend of beans. Yet if you ask for tea they will give you a choice of tea (in bags) of Assam, Darjeeling, Kenyan, English Breakfast, Earl Grey etc (OK may be not the top growths) from reputable tea blenders. Whereas coffee in most places is one blend. At home I use Ethiopian Sidamo, Kenyan Peaberry, Monsoon Malalbar, and other single beans I can get, even where possible from single estate. OK I'm a bit of a coffee snob, but I do this with tea as well. And to be honest I don't have any expectations in many places regarding coffee. I remember watching a barista at a well known chain in the UK going into meltdown. All I wanted was a white coffee whilst waiting at in airport departures, and he couldn't get his head around that fact. He said we can do any coffee you want.. my response was "Can I have a cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain, medium roast please" He just went into total meltdown as he had no idea what I was talking about!

so I'm an Australian that has worked in the coffee industry for 15+ years and I can give you some fun facts. so the best coffee machines come from milan Italy (lamazocca) in 2016 Australia bought the second most amount of machines from lamazocca after America but America only bought some 300+ more than Australia per year for the population size that crazy. Australia has a commercial coffee machine for 1 per 400 people or less. the next fact is Australia buys more high grade beans after Norway and Japan at the auctions so we simply have more of the better beans.

Melbourne, Australia has a strong coffee legacy (that is also spread and been embraced throughout the country) built off the back of post war European influx of Greek, Italian, Turk, Lebanese and Middle Eastern cultures who are embraced and celebrated to this day. Melbourne here. I grew up with Italians, Greeks, Turks, Lebos, and Arabs in generic circle. So each has their own way of making "coffee", but it's an experience. My father, being an aussie stuck to the old instant *cough* chicpowder dust * cough* YUK. From these friends and families, I learnt which is which and you can have a mood type for coffee as well. If I was down and struggling in the morning, I'd head off the the local Italian bistro and grab a short double to start my day in overdrive. The others after for an arvo break, after work, lunch, or at night for a relaxed scene with some friends after dinner. Branch out, and as I found out, each style has it's own flair and memories.

From my experience, actually South Korea has a very good cup coffee. The machineries involve in making coffee(roaster, grinder, etc.) are more accessible in terms of variety and pricing. However, it is very niche. In regards to the individual cafe/ coffee shops in the US, I’m sure there are decent places if you look hard enough. That being said, it’s more due to the general public that willing to accept mediocre coffee and result in overall lower coffee standards. He sums it up very well at @13:10 that people dont focus on the elements that make a good coffee (aroma, crema, acidity, body, aftertaste, etc) but rather try to make it ‘drinkable’ in their dictionary by add wrong proportion & temperature of milk, add cream and sugar, which degrade/interrupt the quality of the coffee in the process. Here in Australia, if you are not living in the outbacks, you almost are guaranteed to have access to a decent cup of coffee within walking distance. But that because the general public acknowledges what constitute a good cup of coffee. We just don’t put up to a bad coffee. We bin a bad one right away if the second or third sip doesn’t work, because we know the next cafe will be able to provide a good cup. The cafe cannot be slacking or they will never get a customer.

Hello from Sweden! Sweden and Finland used to have the highest per capita coffee consumption in the world (Sweden has now been overtaken by a few neighboring countries, but Finland retains the lead) and, not very surprisingly, also has the highest quality coffee in the world. Noone in Sweden or Finland advertises that their coffee is 100 % Arabica, because nearly all coffee is, except for some beans that are meant for Espresso. Even the cheap shit in low price stores is usually 100 % Arabica. It also means that Swedish coffee tends to be on the expensive side. The typical Swedish coffee is drip coffee brewed in a brewer that uses paper filters, nearly all Swedes have one at home. I typically drink my coffee with no milk or sugar, but that's mostly a matter of taste. I LOVE my Moccamaster Clubline brewer, the coffee it makes is soo good, and it's built like a tank and is still going strong after at least 15 years.

I've traveled a lot and I've only been to Starbucks once when we planned a trip to Barcelona on 9/11/2013 wrong. We arrived at the place, soldiers everywhere and a lot of people, they were protesting for the disconnection of Catalonia and everything else was closed 😀 they made a 400km long human chain, maybe the longest in history, over 2,000,000 people. Anyway, I've never heard that Australians should have the best coffee. In Europe it is said about Italians. There is good coffee in the states nowadays. As you mentioned Ian, there are more cafes and specialty coffee houses popping up. I have been to the states a few times over the past 20 years and it has improved significantly. Don't get me wrong though, there is still a majority of bad coffee served including artificial creamer, flavourings and sweeteners. The smaller places have a focus on good quality product that more people are now willing to pay for, the bad places are about low cost and volume.

i live in the UK and a lot of coffee is brewed at too high a temperature, if I am making coffee at home I use a cafetiere or French press, i put 2 heaped desert spoons of ground coffe in and the a little bit of cold water, before adding the boiled water from the kettle. this stops the coffee from being burnt. as far as blends dont know much about all that, but i usually go for ristretto coffee because i like a strong coffee, then i let is steep or soak for a few minutes before pressing the coffee
