If the ball runner lowers his head that is a "football move" and is no longer considered defenseless. Targeting is supposed to stop dirty hits and we all know a dirty hit when we see one but some of these targeting calls are ridiculous. Call em like you see em ref

Have you played organized football, being taught how to hit the opponent? To keep yourself from getting "lit up", as some call it, you must get lower than the guy coming at you. They're not trying to hurt someone when they lower their center of gravity... they're trying to protect themselves and run through the opponent. Now... when they get fatigued and half-ass it, they won't get into a squatting position while runng at top speed and compensate it with lowering the head. If you have the ball and try going under your opponent's center. Thats simply great ball control.

Football is a game of violence and pain. It is extremely fun but violent and if you cannot take a hit such as that you should not play however the rules today are babying receivers and punishing defenders for doing their jobs I.E. obliterating the offense

Targeting should be done away with IMO. I understand it's about safety, but what gets called and what doesn't seems to be totally arbitrary. Obviously flag spearing, leading with the crown, etc, but leading with the pad or facemask should be legal.

I think that one of the things you could do w targeting is give it levels kinda like a flagrant 1 or 2 in basketball. Have level 1 targeting just be a 15 yard penalty and a warning, have level 2 targeting be a 15 yard penalty and the player has to sit out a series or maybe a quarter, then have level 3 targeting be a 15 yard penalty and an ejection. Level 1 would be the forcible contact to the head/neck area of a defenseless player. Level 2 would be forcible contact to the head/neck area of a defenseless player AND leading with the crown of the helmet. Level 3 would be forcible contact to the head/neck area of a defenseless player WITH clear malicious intent (i.e. clearly intending to hurt/injure the opposing player). To me this would still encourage safer tackling because there would be penalties against some unsafe hits, but it wouldn't overstep and get players ejected for a hit were they clearly didn't intend to do anything heinous.

leading with the facemask should absolutely be illegal. these rules also protect the player actually making the hit. any time a player initiates contact with their helmet, it can result in serious pressure on their neck and spine. 2:09 is a good example of how to tackle with good form. he could've hit the receiver up high and made the collision look much more violent, but instead he aimed his shoulder at the receiver's hip and drove him into the ground. still a hard hit, but not one that's gonna result in a concussion. glad to see this is becoming more common.

Offense has so much of an upper hand. They can stiff arm people in the helmet, lead w helmet, and also the defense has to react to what is happening. If the defense does this 1st down and a possible ejection.
