Blizzard Entertainment President J. Allen Brack is a man who knows he doesn't have to apologize, and that's why he's never done it.
Sure, you may feel like you've heard him apologize, and he may even say sorry. He doesn't actually apologize though, and after several issues with Blizzard and its behavior, the hallmarks of the Brack Apology - the Brackology - have become clear.
His routine is transparent, but it never needs to be anything else, because he knows full well he doesn't have to apologize. Not for Blitzchung, not for Warcraft 3: Reforged, not even for how Blizzard damaged the careers of an entire league of pro Heroes of the Storm players.
The Brackology is never sorry, but it is always insulting.

it is the fault of gamers, though. how many times has blizzard/activision done something extremely scummy? how many times to do gamers come back a continue to give blizzard/activision their money? how many people are still wanting konami to make a silent hill or castlevania game? how many gamers keep giving bethesda their money? you people blame capitalism without realizing that capitalism is the solution. stop buying their games. if they aren't making money, then won't do those scummy things. if you don't give them your money, they can't screw you over.

@@thomasjenkins7506 People advocating capitalism, especially unregulated capitalism need to realise copyright laws literally ARE government intervention in the market. The entire industry (and those like it) would not exist without active government support. I realise that's not actually the point you're making... But whena 'capitalist' industry owes it's entire existence to government granted monopoly rights, can you still actually call that capitalism?

@@KuraIthys regulation can exist and should exist in capitalism. government intervention in the market is also fine with capitalism. it's when government controls the market that it's no longer capitalism. that means they are setting the price, the amount produced, and the amount allowed per person.

How to Write a J. Allen Brack apology: 1, Say things haven't been going well, the fewer details the better. 2, Mention your high standards and expectations, and kinda just barely touch on the fact that you failed to meet both. 3, Make an empty promise, like an abusive ex, that "things will be different from now on." Don't worry...you don't have to mean it. 4, DO NOT address ANY of the concerns or questions people have. 5, If you're done, and people look confused, don't worry. You've just successfully apologized like Mr. Brack.

From Wikipedia: A non-apology apology, sometimes called a nonpology or fauxpology, is a statement in the form of an apology that does not express remorse. It is common in both politics and public relations. Saying "I'm sorry you feel that way" to someone who has been offended by a statement is a non-apology apology. It does not admit there was anything wrong with the remarks made, and may imply the person took offense for hypersensitive or irrational reasons. Another form of non-apology does not apologize directly to the injured or insulted party, but generically "to anyone who might have been offended". Statements that use the word "sorry" but do not express responsibility for wrongdoing may be meaningful expressions of regret, but such statements can also be used to elicit forgiveness without acknowledging fault.

Then he said he was sorry. If you were just casually watching, without any insight into what he was talking about, you'd still have no idea what the fuck he was apologizing for. That's by design. He's not sorry. That's why he never actually stated what they did and why it was wrong, just that they acted hastily and then slowly. And we know it was a hollow apology. Blitz and Commentators were still banned. They just had their sentence reduced. That's not a "Oops, sorry. We fucked up." . That's a "Ugh, shut up. We want this to go away." They're not at all ashamed of what they did. Sure, they lowered his ban time. But if Blizzard truly believed what they did was wrong, they'd retract that ban. You know, like someone who was actually sorry for what they did would do? Does anyone truly believe that was anything other than a move to placate the hardcore fans while at the same time letting others know that we won't tolerate anyone who says something Blizzard considers controversial?

Conrad Brooks I don’t doubt it really but I also don’t think blizzard would take any sort of a chance to shadow ban them permanently and it cause another shit storm when blitzchung or the others can get on any social media or reach out to any of the gaming news channels and tell them they got permanently banned by blizzard. Blizzard isn’t intelligent but I wouldn’t think they’d be stupid enough to go back and perma ban them or anyone who spoke out when it was already said and done...twice.
@westinian5502
@westinian5502 5 жыл бұрын
Conrad Brooks I wouldn’t say no one will care because everyone knows that blizzard is a pretty sorry excuse for a company. And if something like that we’re to happen like I said it would genuinely take them a second to become relevant again by reaching out to the gaming news. It happens more than you think really. And sorry you said it happened to you but genuinely no offense no one knows you like blitzchung and you aren’t popular in the gaming industry as he is. And this is just theoretical maybe if they care enough to be pitiful human beings and shadow ban him in the future when he is done playing yeah even he wouldn’t care enough to complain, but as of right now blizzard can’t do anything to him or anyone since they’ve already passed a verdict since they have the spotlight on them.

An apology is fundamentally about accepting responsibility and owning up to your mistakes and missteps. If he accepts responsibility then he has admitted he has done something wrong. If he admits he has done something wrong then he faces the financial and possibly legal repercussions of that. That isn't going to happen is it?
@westinian5502
@westinian5502 5 жыл бұрын
Conrad Brooks I wasn’t talking about them apologizing though... We were talking about them going back and banning blitzchung and the others. But no an actual whole hearted apology would do great not just in this scenario. If you’re in the wrong you need to apologize. I don’t know why you don’t think it isnt good or beneficial, but quite clearly it’s caused them already a bunch of problems with their trying to shift the blame and pleasing China. They need to give a actual apology and get reprimanded. Will it happen no and it’s already effected their sales and their company and it will continue to do so. For how long who knows but if they continue like they are going it’s just going to get worse for them.
@westinian5502
@westinian5502 5 жыл бұрын
Conrad Brooks not true actually. They’re recovering from a heavy lose in 2018 where a 50% drop after it failed to achieve any growth. It is rising but it is not at all close to “the highest it’s ever been” it is somewhere in the middle on the sales charts. And it’s do to mostly activision because of division and cod(and the mobile game) boosting sales. They’re not a strong company give it a few years and they’ll probably go back to where they originally where into the high 80%. It could really use a lot of work and as of right now it’s labeled as a terrible China loving company. And that in itself is not a smart business move and can effect sales(as it already has) and a actual apology and getting reprimanded like everyone has asked for would help but won’t happen so it’ll likely just continue to grow but as it already shows extremely slowly and unsteadily. But this is not really the point and you kinda seem to keep getting sidetracked so I probably won’t reply again hope you have a great day.

Xbox has been getting it right: they know that profit margins on console hardware are slim or sometimes non-existent, so rather than trying to force someone to buy an Xbox to make a measly $14, they just sell the games on multiple platforms. Maybe they don't make that $14 off a console sale, but they make way more when PC gamers who were never going to buy an Xbox buy the game on PC. Xbox made more money and gamers are happy that they got to play a game without having to invest in a new platform. Win for everybody. Furthermore, Xbox hasn't even started selling their next generation console yet, but I already have a platform to play Xbox's latest games: my PC. I feel like not enough people are mentioning the weird audio cuts in WC3 Reforged. At some point they wanted to retcon anyone referring to Grommash Hellscream as Grom and Malfurion Stormrage as Furion, so the audio is awkwardly spliced to either skip them saying their name or put in a line where the same character says their name the preferred way. What's weird is that that was always their name... Manaroth calls Grom Grommash, Furion is referred to as Malfurion several times. They just didn't want them saying the shortened versions of either name for some reason. It's like going through all the places you called someone named Alexander the shortened version of their name Alex and weirdly splicing the audio to remove it.

I remember playing the original demo for Warcraft 2 and thought it was fun, then I discovered the holy light of the Golden Throne *makes the sign of the holy aquila over his heart* and I couldn't help but notice how much Blizzard ripped off from Games Workshop, even down to the iconic GW orks/orcs. Blizzard's actions in the last couple of years is just a continuation of those scummy actions. Blizzard made their name by ripping off (at the time) a small british company, so why shouldn't they continue? And before Blizzard fans say Warhammer is ripped off from Lord of the Rings, GW staff will happily confirm this before pointing you to the Lord of the Rings section of their stores. One of GW's first games was Lord of the Rings, way back in the 70's and they have retained that licence since then. Everything GW learnt from doing the LotR game went into designing Warhammer. And again into the legendary Warhammer 40,000. Remember good citizens: The God-Emperor protects, but a loaded bolter always helps.

Just a point of order there; Blizzard is scummy; but StarCrafts original mold was bought from Games Workshop legally by Blizzard. If I recall correctly, StarCraft was originally put together as something particular to a subsector of space in WH40K, but they never really did anything with that property. So yeah, lots of similarities, but they've been apart and have had enough work out into them that they are distinct and have a very different feel to them.

A bit late but in 2016 i kept hearing worse and worse stuff from people working there - who were even more heartbroken. They cared so much about their company and their customers but ever changing structures and directives prevented them from doing quality work. Each and every one left. I cherish the good memories and the friendships i was fortunate to make. @alanmichael5619

The thing I find staggering about the current state of the video games market - for decades marketers have worked as hard as they can to get rid of the "oddball gamer" stereotype. Only, over the last 10 years, to establish a brand image that video games are "dodgy" and that production standards are lowering. Whilst the industry is undoubtedly large, and companies like Activision-Blizzard are making money, growth is not nearly as strong as it should be. Indeed, with legislation slowly creeping in around microtransactions and lootboxes I wouldn't be surprised to see a period of negative growth in the video games industry within the next 5 years. Why? Because a big chunk of the core market *are* suspicious of new content and because there is a growing image that video games are decreasing in quality. The mobile games industry already has a drastically bad image problem and, with those poor practices leaking into the rest of the games market it is only a matter of time before consumer confidence bottoms out. This isn't to say that shitty practices will die out. Bastards will forever be bastards. But it does mean that there is growing space in the market for solid, well produced games. Cities: Skylines was a strong example of what happens when a major publisher screws up (Simcity [2013]). The same goes for Outer Worlds (Fallout 76). I mean, all fortnite was was a refinement of a preexisting formula that had actually existed in numerous other games before including Minecraft. All they did was release a polished product that had a distinctive look:- when it launched we didn't see a litany of bugs and missteps. The "black hole" incident was actually genius when looked at through this lens - it meant that the company had extra time to do last checks on the next update before hitting the button to go live - and that they could divert more resources into that! Blizzard, as a company, is clearly fearful of the future as that glorious WoW money slowly decreases year-on-year. Electronic Arts survive solely on exclusive rights to things like FIFA and Madden and Star Wars. Bethesda... well... i dread to think what their balance sheet looks like after the last year. The point is that Major Publishers had a great opportunity over the last 10 years to make video games truly mainstream. Instead, their greedy practices have kept video games in the "nerdy kid" corner - prime opportunities have been missed. Instead of innovating the AAA market has simply spent its time panicking and releasing garbage in the hope of pleasing shareholders.
@Spamhard
@Spamhard 5 жыл бұрын
This seems a little optimistic considering most the games aimed towards the more "casual" gamers are often where the easiest money is at. Video games haven't been kept in a nerdy kid corner (they never really were in the nerdy kid corner to begin with), video games make huge amounts of money from sports games, mobile games and annual FPS games that are explicitly aimed towards the mainstream. The 'core market' don't give a shit, which is why shit like FIFA and CoD are still some of the biggest money makers. Sure, some of their numbers are dwindling but I think that's more from over saturation than shitty practice. There may be a crash on the horizon for some of AAA, but as long as capitalism exists, there's gonna be this consistent issue that'll keep bubbling back to the surface over and over. The big names of today may not be there in a few decades, but there'll be others taking their place.
@alanmichael5619
@alanmichael5619 5 жыл бұрын
@@Spamhard Thank you for your response. I'm not trying to claim that shitty practice will vanish, nor am I saying it will necessarily decrease. I'm not expressing optimism or pessimism - this is more an expression of deep frustration. What I'm saying is that the video games industry is missing out on prime opportunities. Video games have *plenty* of room for growth. For example; in the UK video games have achieved approximately 50% penetration and, of those, 59% spend money on games annually (Satista, 2019). Furthermore a very large chunk of revenue being received by people like EA and activision is coming from a core subset. Put it this way Ultimate Team is earning EA 30% of its revenue now. About 35% of FIFA players spend money on Ultimate Team and, of those, 20% are contributing 80% of the revenue (Various Sources, 2018-2019). We can also point to statistics on how people define themselves. For example, only 10% of americans consider themselves gamers (Pew Research, 2018). It's these kind of figures show that these companies have got a long way to go before they can say they've graduated from being niche products. Yes, the revenues for games are high, but the potential is so much higher. You're right to talk about oversaturation as a reason for a potential decrease in overall sales in the future - I would personally consider this shitty practice too, but lets not split hairs - it is this oversaturation and decision to try and squeeze existing customers that is causing a problem and gaps in the market. Take, for example, The Sims. The Sims 4 came out 6 years ago and had pretty mediocre reviews at the time. The franchise had very significant revenues behind it and I really wouldn't be surprised if a competitor moved into that space. There's also an element here of publishers like EA & Activision relying too heavily on customer loyalty when damaging their own brand. They have, so far, gotten away with it because the games industry has been in growth overall. So new people have been joining the market replacing the ones ditching the brands at a faster rate. People don't ditch brands overnight - it tends to be far less dramatic than that. As I say; what I'm saying here is neither optimism or pessimism. It is more an expression of incredulity that these big organisations can be so short sighted. That they have allowed themselves to become so beholden to shareholders that they're effectively going to bring about a recession in the industry. This, of course, is hardly surprising. The "shareholder model" is little more than a form of perpetual debt that a company accumulates for itself.
