I've always said that the thing about being an artist is that if you are a real one, then it is impossible to just up and retire being an artist. It's in your blood, in your soul. So, I wonder what they really quit in the end: art or the business. If J. Cole really quits rap, that's on him, but the hunger to create never goes away just because you are done with everything else.

I think he’s mainly playing with thoughts of retiring. He doesn’t truly know. I don’t think he’s done ever. He just wants a long break to enjoy himself and the fruits of his labor. He deserves it. Dope video. I personally think he may stop doing albums and maybe just drop a song or 2 every now and then. Because when you're an artist, it's hard to stop writing and creating. You may stop for a month or 2, maybe even a year or 2. But that feeling to write and create always seems to creep back at some point and the ideas just keep flowing. Even if it's for just that moment or period. And if it's good enough you will not only be eager to, but you may feel compelled to record and release the project/s for the masses to consume. That's just my opinion though.

I’m a fan of Cole but honestly I hate to hear him speak of retirement. IMO it’s extremely too early. Cole has imo at least 2 classic albums & its around this time an artist usually starts to explore their artistry & branch out. Think Kanye with Yeezuz or Drake with Honestly Nevermind. Maybe even a collab project like Watch the Throne or Her Loss. Cole hasn’t really done any of this outside of the Dreamville albums. And at the end of his run I’m afraid that Cole will ultimately be remembered as the “Socially Acknowledged Good Rapper” & that’s all. Didn’t contribute to pushing the sound or introduce a new flow. Just a good rapper.
