Uncle Phil was one of the biggest role models he had as a child because his father wasn’t around. When this song are out, Uncle Phil (Fresh Prince) had just passed

the "back when you could get a platinum plaque without no melody" line I think he's talking about the fact that most mainstream songs have a catchy melody, not necessarily a shot towards auto tune but I think he's just addressing how the music has changed. Rappers who can find a very catchy melody are gonna be poppin, (regardless of lyrics/content), it's just easy on the ears

Back when you could get a platinum plaque without a melody... he means that songs nowadays rely heavily on a “dope” or “hard” beat to be successful

When this song came out it was just after Uncle Phil (James Avery) died in 2013

i think his point was at the beginning uncle phil was the only male role model because he grew up fatherless and everybody watched Fresh Prince and then he quickly moves on to the topic of his own dad by saying i get a bitch oregnant ima be a better you

Uncle Phil was a black role model for black children to look up to. Maybe they had no father etc. In a time where you didn't really see too many black actors in that light. Will had no father and Phil took him and provided and became his father. Great character

Lol I know who Uncle Phil is, I didn't ask who he was. I asked why did he say rest in peace to him. Then someone told me this song came out around the same time he died. Now that I didn't know.
