I read J D Vance's book when it was first available. I thought he was a warm and caring man who had risen above a terrible childhood. He also gave insight into how low socioeconomic folks vote. I remember wishing politicians would read the book so they could figure out how to court votes from this block of voters. I bet Trump has read the book.

My mother was #8 of 9 children in rural southern Mississippi. She was the only one to graduate from high school. She worked from high school until one of the attorneys at the law firm she worked at asked if she would consider going to law school. She went to night law school after working all day. She passed each class and finally the bar exam the first time in 1964. My mother worked in the private sector and eventually took a position with the Veterans Administration in adjudication. She worked tirelessly for 34.5 years HELPING veterans get the benefits they earned serving our country!!! She’s earned her eternal reward now, but I am ever so proud of my Mama!

Biden is poor parents kid... you see the difference between poor people and rich people... Trump can still go on another 20 years it's the way the rich are groomed and taken care of they think different while the poor struggle with their kids to make it. Look at Hunter... I guarantee you he is carrying pain inside ❤ his mind is shattered ... but you see trumps kids and they're outstanding producers nothing shattered in them. @@bhazerelli7611 Well, it's nothing about him personally. It's that his book and the movie from it gives a lot of the wrong messages. It makes everything about personal failing, and completely ignored systems that contribute to poverty in rural areas. The kind of capitalism that we have in the US has done a huge number in the rural areas of the country, and led to people leaving in droves. It is his personal story and that's fine, but some people are taking a message from it that doesn't make sense. Also, he could have helped his mother in a better way (from what happened in the movie). She's having a drug issue, and anyone going through that is going to have some struggles getting past it. Here's one criticism of his book and the surrounding conversation: www.dissentmagazine.org/article/leaving-conservatism-behind-blue-collar-republican-progressive

Joseph Ramirez did you grow up with a drug addict mom? Trying to help them is not easy, and it isn’t the child’s responsibility. After years of going through that, you get tired of it. It is mentally draining. I don’t blame him at all for what he did. He got out of a bad environment, and made a better life for himself. Something that is very hard to do because drug addict parents manipulate you into feeling guilty for them, and leaving them is extremely difficult. It isn’t just a black and white situation

Man he grew up 10 minutes from where my mom lived till she died suddenly at 54. Both my parents are from Middletown, my mom's side from Breathitt just like JD. Brought tears to my eyes. Hard to believe a kid with a background like mine, both of us sitting in police cars while our addict moms got hauled away, might be VP is just mind blowing. Whatever your politics we have to admit and appreciate that our country gives kids like him, and me, a way up in life if we really, really want it and work hard. For me it was a fantastic college prep public school in Cincinnati that introduced me to the more articulate stable side of life. I live abroad now and miss Ohio every day, my kitchen walls are plastered with family photos from Middletown and KY so my half Swedish half American kids know their hillbilly legacy, good and bad.

I'm with Lyndsey. I too was the one in my family that felt the responsibility of taking care of my siblings. I had 2 older sisters and a younger brother. They were learning disabled and I wasn't. Mom always told me I was the man of the family and I had to take care of them. I took this responsibility seriously but even now at 54 I grieve at my failure to protect them. We were removed from our parents care and placed in Foster Care where we continued to be abused. We were then moved to a Christian Group home, Gateway Woods in Leo Indiana. We thrived there but when they left I was lost. Had no one to care for and I didn't know who I was and what my place was. God has been good to me though and I praise him every day for making me the man I am today. God bless Trump, God bless Vance and God bless the U.S.A.

Forgive the child in you that thinks you’ve failed. Many children are given the job of being an adult way too soon. It sticks to you, be the leader, the boss, don’t dare make a mistake, make good choices. Parent tapes. That’s what it’s called in some psych classes. It’s the replay of things you heard or were subjected too by your parents. We all have them. When I get sick of hearing their words in their voice in my head, I tell them to stop. Then I proceed in my own direction. If I made a mistake, I live with it. If it turned out well, I live with that, too. Keep giving your inner self pats on the back. You deserve it!😊

I lived through an alcoholic era where my dad was always drinking and had other addictions as well, stems from his childhood as he was abused as a child from having to work as hard as a grown man in the fields and no way out, making moonshine to sell to have food to eat, very poverty stricken, non-ending , he died working hard and still in his alcoholism cycles. Vance was in great part able to overcome his past because he is highly intelligent and highly educated. There are many reasons people overcome their past but it helps to be so intelligent and good-looking and articulate. So they get ahead through ignorance.

Great story and sad for that boy who lived in that situation. I was a single mom with two young children. Left my beautiful home to escape a bad relationship. No money and got laid-off from my corporate job. I worked hard to give my children a better lives. Thanks god that I never smoked or drank. Congratulations JD 🇺🇸

People like J.D. Vance are an inspiration to all of us . Overcoming the challenges life throws at you and working towards solving problems that haunted you so others don’t have to go through them . Weak men would have broken down and went astray but he built an amazing life and is contributing to the society in a positive way .

Great interview with JD Vance: about truth, not embarrassed by his past (although still feels pain from it) because he's worked through all of the baggage, we all have baggage & some people have more than others, he knows how to be sincere and speak for many people who are forgotten in the USA. He also knows how to remain being true to those he loved/loves. What a smart man !

He's not only smart, he's incredibly courageous to write a book that exposes the pain of his traumatic childhood that would embarrass most. He exposed his vulnerabilities and turned his shame into success. I greatly admire him!

Trouble is, he's a lying grifter. The hillbilly who NEVER lived in Appalachia. He grew up in the steel town of Middleport Ohio. His grandparents left Appalachia when they were very young, his mother, a thrice-married drug addict, never lived there, he NEVER lived there. He portrays himself as the hero who pulled himself up by his bootstraps while all the rest of his ne'r-do-well family, friends and associates were lazy drunks, wife beaters and brawlers who loved their squalor, comparing them (in his words) to typical Appalachian residents. He became semi-famous by writing a book based on lies and stereotypes.

Critics are just jealous. Out of brokeness comes beauty. JD you are awesome❣️ We loved the movie. Many of families go through this. It needs to be heard, not swept under the rug. Narcissists are jealous people. U don't owe them any explanation.

So running for senate and bragging about the endorsement of an anti semite while being funded by billionaire Peter Thiel to then give him tax cuts and then screwing over people in Appalachia is awesome? Have you changed your opinion on Vance?

This was planned. The whole thing. The fact that he's now running for senate means that NBC, NY Times and even Ron Howard and Netflix were all (albeit unwittingly) working for his campaign. And he's in it for himself, not for helping others. He wants to make himself and his republican friends richer by pushing this republican trope of picking yourself up by your bootstraps. If he was serious, he'd be fighting to get serious legislative changes to the U.S: to actually help the poor and the middle class but alas he's not. Republican tax cuts do not help the poor. Nor does their war on drugs help solve the opioid crisis.

Good answer when he was asked about whether he had dealt with it all. It’s just your life, deal with every thing that comes up to be healed. Enjoy the process and be happy.
