I was struck by the tension throughout this video between Kara Swisher and the interviewer, Fortune’s Andrew Nusca. It was so pronounced, it caused me to look at the agenda for this conference to understand the context. This interview was slotted in as a 25-minute spot to close out the three-day event. That means Fortune was aware of the possibility for fireworks, so they placed Swisher at a point in the schedule when they could be pretty much sure that none of the people she was talking about would be in the audience. They would have all been long gone by then. As for the interview itself, Nusca conducted the back-and-forth in a way intended to keep Swisher from giving anything more than short, clipped responses to his prepared questions. Swisher picked up on this immediately, but instead of taking the hint and shutting up, “she persisted” in trying to offer more fully developed responses to his queries. Any one of the answers she tried to give could have filled this entire time slot and would have delivered more value than what is on display here: a tug-of-war between a guest who wanted make a point about the threats to the democratic order posed by the tech oligarchy and a host whose livelihood is derived from that very same oligarchy. Swisher was delivering a message that her host didn’t want to hear. That makes this interview a particularly poignant document in the history of the rise of the authoritarian tech elite in the US, and the failure of the business press to protect democracy from a threat it did not want to confront.
