It’s not, but if you like it that’s a different matter. All three of Haydn’s extant violin concertos are modest affairs (one is lost), and all are very early works. This G major concerto is probably the earliest, and certainly technically the easiest, pre-dating even Haydn’s Eszterhazy appointment in 1761; it is routine and humdrum with almost no spark of the originality found in the early symphonies and string quartets. The A major concerto is slightly more substantial than the G major, but I think the C major (Hob. VIIa:1) written especially for the fine Eszterhazy 1st violin leader* is by far the most successful of the three, and the only one really worth performing at a public concert (the others - though pleasant enough - suffice really only as student exercises). * When entering the C major concerto into his catalogue of works, after the incipit, Haydn added ‘fatto per il luigi’ (sic) ‘Made for Luigi’.
