J. MYSLIVEČEK: Antigona (1773)

Myslivecek operas certainly deserve more credit than they get nowadays. They are all charming and well written/composed. After Mozart, I like Haydn operas, J.C. Bach, Myslivecek, Dittersdorf, Jommelli, Sarti, Piccinni, etc. So many out there, it is nice to hear new ones... Thank you for sharing this. :-)

In 1773 Mislivecek was 40 and Mozart was 17 and had already wrote Lucio Silla and the exultate jubilate motet. The style and level of complexity of the writing of this opera was achieved by Mozart in his childhood, so... There is no comparaison.

@@rossini9mozart10 But look at the miracles, so talented Amadeus was not able to find a job in 5 cities!!! After his dismissal from the prince's service, Mozart went on a city trip with his mother on September 23, 1777; he was trying to find a new and better job. First he spoke in vain at the Bavarian electoral court in Munich, then in Augsburg and at the court of the Mannheim elector Karl Theodor, where he met the electoral orchestra and its conductor, his later friend Christian Cannabich (Mannheim School). But even here he got neither a job nor any musical commissions. After five months in Mannheim, he and his mother, urged by their father, went on to Paris, where they arrived on March 23, 1778. Mozart was able to perform his ballet music Les petits riens there, but did not get any further engagements. Mozart has been turned into a myth and a TABOO that does not correspond to empirical and historical facts. The WORLD (musical world) did not "revolve" around Mozart - it "revolved" around Paisiello, André Grétry, Giuseppe Sarti, Mysliveček, Salijeri,..., Soler. Leropold and Amadeus Mozart tried to climb among the ESTABLISHED musical stars with the help of MARKETING (like from the 21st century), they did not succeeded.

The difference between Mysliveček, Gretry, Sarti, Soler, Paizelo,..., Salieri and Mozart is that Mysliveček, Gretry, Sarti, Soler, Paizelo,..., Salieri's operas were - original; for - contemporaries - Mozart was a "fixer of other people's notes" (Amedeus says this several times in his letters to father Leopold). What killed Mozart? - conscience - that he did not rise to create an original opera.
