いわきに住んでます 地震起きてから間もなく鮫川の水位がどんどん上がってすぐ逃げました

Thankfully, the water level didn't reach a height that made it fatal to people at ground level, and it's speed wasn't as overwhelming as in some coastal communities. I was pleased to see that people had somewhere to go to escape the incoming water at ground level.
Why do tsanami wave just keeps going n going for? Why isn't it just one big huge surfing type wave? Eg 20ft waimea bay wave etc...but these are like huge long instead of huge high

A lot of it depends on how the coast is shaped. Many times the traditional looking wave breaks further out. In that area of northern Japan, there is deep water just off the coast, but then the coastline is very craggy. Many town are at the end of basically a canyon. So the deep water is suddenly thrust into a shallow and narrow area, and it just keeps rising and rising even though the wave broke a distance away. Look at Onagawa to see what I mean
