A song from the Sino-Japanese war, translated by me. The song is a famous composition from 1938 and among the most famous Gunka ever made, referenced widely in a number of popular media items, contemporary as well as historical. The lyrics speak for themselves.
NOTE: No political statement is meant by this historical document.
I am an admirer of Japan, China and other Asian countries.

My grandfather used to sing this song when he was drank. わたしの祖父はよく酔っ払ってこの歌を歌っていました。 He went to Manchuria when he was young. 祖父は若い時に満州にいったといっていました。 He did not want to talk about the War because he came back to Japan due to health issues. 祖父は病院がちで戦時中に満州から帰ってきたのであまりそのことを話したがらなかったです。After he came back in Japan, people called him a loser because he was not able to die for the country. なぜなら日本に戻ったあと周りの人は祖父を戦争で死ねなかった負け犬と呼んだからです。Strange to think, if my Grand father died at the war I am not to be here. 考えると不思議ですが、あの時祖父が戦争で亡くなっていたらわたしはここにいないのです。I am really happy for him passed away on bed, my Grand mother besides him. わたしは今でも祖父が祖母の寄り添う中、ベッドの上で亡くなったことを本当によかったと思っています。

私の祖父もこうやって送り出されたんですね。映ってるのかな。祖父が持って帰ってきた写真と似たような場面がいくつかあります。 今、介護職してるのですが、女性利用者さんたちの間でこの曲が人気で、よく何人かで歌って「天皇陛下、ばんざーい！」と言ってほかの利用者さんたちが拍手！という現象が起こってます。毎日「昔ってすごい時代だな…」と感じてます。今と真逆ですよね。そりゃ戦前生まれの方の顔付きはピシッとなりますよね。

私の曽祖母は戦争で二人の兄弟をなくし、今老人ホームに入っていますが、自分の息子の顔さえ忘れているのに、この曲だけは忘れず、よく歌っています。ですが介護士に聞いた話なんですがこの曲を歌い出すととても機嫌が悪くなるそうです。きっと戦死した兄弟のことを思い出すのでしょう。

One of my favorite fellow Finns, Lieutenant Colonel Paavo Susitaival, who was the older brother of Bobi Sivén, the lensmann of Repola who shot himself after the district and neighboring Porajärvi were exchanged for Petsamo in the Treaty of Tartu, greatly admired Japan (and rightly so, I think). He befriended the Japanese military attaché in Finland and even thought the Finnish state should emulate the example set by Japan. Then there's also the Grafton Affair, in which Japan tried to arm Finnish independence activists (and various Russian radicals) during the Russo-Japanese War. The deal about the arms shipment was made by Akashi Motojiro and Konni Zilliacus.

Kind of like an optimist version or alternative to "Senyuu" which I believe was banned by the government during WWII. They probably wanted to create a replacement for Senyuu when they made this song. There are both a dead comrade in this and Senyuu, but where as his death is something tragic and sad overshadowing the battle in Senyuu. Here it is just portrayed as something honorable and glorious with him shouting Banzai for the emperor before dying.

Arjaneism Yes I believe that Senyuu was banned at that time (people still sang it regardless.) The Showa era is an interesting historical time for Japan which I think we can all learn much from, how a few managed to turn the democracy into a totalitarian state in the thirties, I have just read the graphic novel "Showa" by Shigeru Mizuki highly recomendable portrait of Japan at the time, Mizuki is a well known comic legend who was also drafted in the imperial army and lost an arm during the war.
