Ayurveda graduates work as “cheap labour” alongside modern medicine practitioners in public and private hospitals. Most use modern medicine and equipment to treat patients and usually get paid less than MBBS doctors. “I don’t know why the government is allowing Ayurveda students to practice in modern medicine hospitals and clinics. To get their livelihood, the Ayurveda students are working as cheap labour in hospitals. This is against medical ethics.

Why they called themselves as a Doctor why not vaidya? Somebody told me that ayurvedic student study both allopathy as well as Ayurveda but they cannot able to practice allopathy in many states of India. So what is the use to study both. I feel either government merge the two streams or they can proudly called themselves as vaidya but not doctor.

Post independence there was a surge in demand for MBBS doctors. The British had established few colleges and output was low. However there were Ayurveda colleges established by the princely states. The Ayurveda students then began to be taught Modern Medicine in addition their subjects to fulfil this demand. The teachers though were self taught people without having undergone academic rigour and testing. With Modern Medicine becoming such a hit Ayurveda became relegated to sidelines by Ayurveda graduates themselves.Actually 99% BAMS doctors/ vaidya practice Modern Medicine on their own responsibility and are fully accountable. The Scientific Medical wont give authority to practice Modern Medicine but ostensibly to create a feeling for such subjects . Medical systems can never be integrated into one because each system of medicine is at loggerheads with any other system.
