To effectively reduce carbon emissions, empowering farmers is the fastest approach. A proposal should be introduced allowing farmers to benefit from trees they planted 15 years ago or more. Trees with long lifespans and high fruit yields, such as jackfruit, mango, and Ayurvedic plantations, should be prioritized, as they can significantly reduce the carbon footprint. Additionally, farmers can earn good returns by selling the fruits, encouraging more farmers to plant trees. Furthermore, there should be a change in the current policy to allow farmers to claim benefits from older trees, which would prevent the cutting down of mature trees. Under the existing policy, farmers can only claim newly planted trees after three years. Expanding this to include older plantations would provide immediate rewards, further incentivize sustainable practices, and significantly reduce the carbon footprint. Moreover, this proposal could help reduce the migration of younger generations to cities, as farming would become a viable source of income. This would alleviate congestion in urban areas and promote sustainable development in rural regions. This would also help in reducing barron lands in rural regions.
