Unification to the Mainland by Taiwan has been made more difficult by the 50 years Japanese occupation. It is said that many Japanese soldiers and Japanese citizens chose to remained in Taiwan taking on civilian roles. Thus naturally they and their children would have allegiance to Japan. The impact of 50 years occupation is great if there has been an uterior motive to convert Taiwan to Japanese territory forever. As of now, Japanese industries would have tentacles everywhere in Taiwan. On top this, Taiwan has relied heavily on the Japanese and US market for their export. Unless the chosen leaders of Taiwan ( fully Chinese not mixed Japanese blood or Japanese inside although Taiwanese outside) has a vision of being part of Mainland China's great rejuvenation, peaceful integration is very unlikely as a sword has placed to permanently divide Taiwan from the Mainland. Taiwan is the only place where the "Three letter agencies" can recruit operatives to infiltrate the mainland without being detected a hundred kilometres away. Taiwan island divides the Chinese coastline into two half. It therefore prevent the smooth movement of naval vessels between North and South of China. Taiwan labour force can be easily manipulated to provide a source of cheap labour for American and Japanese manufacturing. Taiwan is also a big source of secured "intellectual" capital as the Taiwanese are highly educated and intelligent. Their families can be easily controlled and leveraged for obedience and compliance. So, war between China and Taiwan to achieve unification is a distinct possibility! Any great Taiwanese leader that habour this vision will likely be removed or assassinated. Political assassination has now become part and parcel of grand geopolitical chess game! No protocols even in peacetime.
