As a result the soldiers were ordered to retreat south, but majority of their hearts longed to recover their lost land in the north. 01:23 Refers to the desire for the empire to recover its strength. 'Four directions' refers to countries/ kingdoms surrounding China and this line basically says that the Middle Kingdom will grow powerful and its neighbours from all directions will come and pay respects/ tribute.
