Joseph Panimayadas Chandrababu Rodriguez Fernando (1927-1974) was an Indian film comedian, actor, director, singer and dancer, whose Chaplinesque style on-screen movements and singing style made him popular from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. He had a mastery of the Madras Bashai, a dialect unique to the Madras region. His slapstick style of comedy has been emulated by subsequent actors. Many of his songs have remained popular.

மனத்தில் பட்டதை மறைத்துப் பேசத் தெரியாத காரணத்தாலேயே தமிழ் சினிமா உலகம் புறக்கணித்த மிகப்பெரிய கலைஞர் ஜே.பி. சந்திரபாபு. நடிப்பு, இசை, நடனம், இயக்கம், எழுத்து என்று சினிமாவில் அவருக்குப் பரிச்சயமில்லாத துறைகளே இல்லை. மிகப்பெரிய கனவுகளுடன், மிகப்பெரிய போராட்டத்துக்குப் பின் திரையுலகுக்கு வந்த சந்திரபாபு, மிகக் குறுகிய காலத்தில் அளப்பரிய சாதனைகள் செய்துவிட்டு இறந்துபோனவர். தமது சொந்த வாழ்க்கையின் ஆறாத சோகங்களை மறைத்துக்கொண்டு மக்களைச் சிரிக்கவைத்த மகத்தான கலைஞர். சற்றும் நம்பமுடியாத அதிரடிக் கருத்துகளை அடிக்கடி வெளியிட்டு, திரைத்துறையினரை தர்மசங்கடத்துக்கு உள்ளாக்கியவர். ஆனால் சந்திரபாபு பேசியதெல்லாம் சத்தியம். அந்தக் காலத்து முன்னணிக் கலைஞர்கள் பலருடனான தமது கசப்பான அனுபவங்களை சந்திரபாபுவே பல்வேறு தருணங்களில் வெளிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார். அவர்களெல்லாம் அவரது கண்ணீரை அதிகமாக்கியவர்கள். பதிலுக்கு சந்திரபாபு வெளிப்படுத்தியது புன்னகை, புன்னகை மட்டுமே.
