Tolkiens childhood made me remember what it was like growing up in Hertfordshire , I used to love being outdoors all day long , exploring woods and fields , sitting by a river and going fishing or swimming , building camps and tree houses .

these young people died in droves to protect the britain they had left behind, the ones that did survive just wanted to leave it all behind them, and would never talk about it, and what did they find, when they got home, that the world, that they had fought to protect, was rapidly disappearing, some people, had discovered, that wars were profitable, so we ended up with, no war no profit, so ask yourself, what is the longest period for britain, that we havent, been, involved in a war, somewhere, for reasons that most of us, dont, understand ? well tolkien did, understand, the futility of it, and he was trying to protect what he loved, but against overwhelming odds, so he retreated into his books, to escape from, what for him, was total despair and frustration, that peoples sacrifice was simply cast aside, and the powers that be, had learnt nothing, and its all there in his writing if you know how to interpret it

Tolkien warns to not take it as meta, for what cometh, thou art not ready

In theater characters can be two demention stereotypes.. the examples are in Greek theater masks and the comedy del Arte handbook. Tolkein's characters are a Poetic expression of the life of the human spirit. In this way they are allegories.

i very much go with the second analogy, having been brought up in the greenbelt, it sickens me, that greedy people, want to exploit it for profit, and when they want a new motorway, where do they stick it, right though the middle of an ancient woodland, less peoples houses to worry about, and of course a cheaper route, its all about profit, again, if i was an ent ide march on the people responsible for letting it happen, and destroy their, dwellings, but of course they live in cities, so they have no respect for nature, their the return of the romans, cities and straight roads, and central heating, and more destructive industry, to keep them rich, tolkien wasnt in the second world war, so, any subconscious thoughts, would have to come from the massacre, experienced in the first one, were people did, live in holes in the ground ?

The one guy is surprised people didn't think the shire was based on England. When I was a kid I thought it looked like Ireland cause it's so green and the Hobbits eat potatoes

To use Tolkien's word the settings are widely "applicable". In Aldbury, Hertfordshire is a row of small terraced houses which to me is forever Bagshot Row. It is a little way down a hill from a house my grandfather built for his family in 1947 www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.803761,-0.6003991,248m/data=!3m1!1e3

Does Ian Holm narrate this? Or does the narrator just have a similar voice (and the same accent)?

Late reply but he did indeed, may he rest in peace.

@@o0TreyRoyer0o Thanks for the reply. I had thought it was him. Speaking of his passing, I look at LOTR differntly now. I no longer quote Ian Holm in jest to my friends (or, in other situations). Something the Indigenous poeple here taught me a lesson about (re: disrespecting a dead man's soul.) Sufficing to say, I echo your sentiment: may he rest in peace.

Mind you, if I had read the man's written word, I would still quote. It's just something about quoting his screen presence that seems to rob everyone involved of the spirit of the thing.

@@Sagittarius-81 I understand where you're coming from, for me when I quote Characters like Saurman and Bilbo, it helps me remember them in a good spirit and the joy they gave me. Such a brilliant cast!
