What a performance! Mertens is one of the finest Baroque basses of all time, and I adore Margot Oitzinger. Superb period oboe! There’s an old Marriner recording with Janet Baker and John Shirley-Quirk (Roger Lord oboe) that’s also very dear to me. Good listening for Holy Week ☺️ It’s interesting how two recordings from very different sound worlds can both be profoundly musical and moving.

I'm sorry for all the other basses in the world, but Klaus Mertens is probably the best bass voice in Bach repertoire ever existed. It's great to know that he's still singing greatly.

The bass aria is of an otherwordly beauty. Margot Oitzinger's alto is a joy to hear. A very subtle organ accompaniment by Norbert Zeilberger (1969-2012), who tragically died in an accident in the year of this recording.
