I began crying halfway through listening to this aria right after I stumbled upon it just a few minutes ago. I'm no expert, but I use my common sense in judging things, which means very few things ever get my 100% approval. But this woman hit the sweet spot of forcefulness, timber, energy and just utterly breathtaking emotion. With the violin echoing her sentiments, it was the perfect storm of melancholy that hit me from nowhere. The best aria I have ever heard, and I've heard my share.

I really like kozená's version of this wonderful aria, and the feeling she puts into it, as well as her natural way of singing. I personally don't care whether she's a mezzo or a soprano (there's no need to put labels on everything, nor to compare different singers all the time); to me she's a good singer, end of story. I know she's not the best singer ever (who is, anyway...?), but she's good enough to be where she is. It's great having the chance to listen to so many different voices/versions!

The beauty of this performance of an amazing piece of music is not only the superb tone, but the perfect intonation. Other performances show a tendency to sing sharp but Magdalena is so beautifully in tune. The violinist likewise. This is so moving. so, regarding Beauty... it surrounds us, just pick it, gather, collect, or... follow the best you met - than the Beauty goes to touch you. For example. Tonight I put to one playlist some different versions of this aria. For two reasons: one, I ended to read Бесы and it was in harmony with Bach. And the second: actually I am disturbed by sounds (I am normal, just in innormal situation) and it is hard to fall to sleep. So Bach was helpful. I start my day, usually, with u2b's music (my choice) and when I touched the mouse to enlighten the screen... Richter's full version of this Passion went on. Figures(fixed only ones) from memory(very fresh): 1971 edition, lasts 3h16min, this aria starts at 1h45min. Just magic. I touched the mouse at this point.

I can't find the right words to say what I feel. The conductor probably wanted the voice to feel like an instrument (which is one, naturally), opposed to the modern conception of the voice, as in voice vs. orchestra/ensemble. This interpretation is probably the closest Bach would have had if he were given the chance while he was alive.

Ending to read Бесы, Федор Достоевский, this aria followed me (by my choice). There he says, that it is up to human being to make his life joyfull, once the human got the gift of life... And earlier in this book the same personage says, that there is nothing meaningfull in life, except beauty. btw, genius of Dostojevski noticed, how pittyfull was the result of life of the man just saying beautifull words. @00oww - Maybe many won't. However, in this instance, my idealist nature comes to the fore and I'd hope to give credit first. That being said, I'm very (a very flawed) human and often fail to live up to this ideal. :) I also recognise other people will find beauty where I'm blind. If you're interested in cinema, what originally drew my attention to this work was a film called The Sacrifice by Andrei Tarkovsky. This music is used during the opening titles - however, a rather poor recording.

I like Magdalena Kozena. It's not for nothing that she is currently Sir John Eliot Gardiner's go-to Soprano these days for Bach cantatas. But unfortunately, this isn't her best work. This piece sits way too low in her voice. Also, this tempo is way too slow. If you want to hear how this piece is sung to p-e-r-f-e-c-t-i-o-n, check out the version of Sir Michael Chance.
@DieFlabbergast9 жыл бұрын
+R Fogg Yes it is her best work. This is one of the best interpretations of Erbarme Dich ever performed. And there is no such thing as perfection in music or any other art. Your "perfection" is someone else's imperfection.
@ricfogg9 жыл бұрын
+DieFlabbergast I hope your post wasn't an attempt to convince me of your belief, because that would be a complete waste of your time. As I said before, Magdalena Kozena is a marvelous singer, but this area is just not her best work. It not only sits too low in her register, but the tempo is excruciatingly too slow which makes the whole thing almost painful to listen to. And yes, there is perfection in music. Just because you can't achieve it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
@DieFlabbergast9 жыл бұрын
+R Fogg I couldn't give a damn what you like or dislike. To repeat: the concept of perfection in music or any other art is complete nonsense. Art is by its nature subjective: unlike mathematics or science, there is no "right" or "wrong." This debate about this performance is a vivid illustration of that fact. To you, the tempo is far too low; to me and many other people, it is just right. I also disagree that the register of this piece is too low for Magdalena's voice; to me, it seems she is perfectly comfortable singing this.
@ricfogg9 жыл бұрын
+DieFlabbergast If you couldn't give a damn what I like or dislike (which I really appreciate), exactly why did you feel the need to reply to my random posting which had nothing to do with you? Was that an attempt to show how knowledgeable you are, which fell completely flat? I find it ironic that you are claiming that music is subjective, but you fell it was important for you to respond to my posting to let me know how much you disagree with the fact that I prefer someone else's interpretation of the piece and that I don't think it suits Kozena's voice. Maybe you should take your own advice and keep your own musical tastes to yourself. Like I said, your unsolicited advice and opinion were a complete waste of your time. They are not going to change the fact that I think Kozena sucks in this piece, and that Michael Chance is just brilliant. To each his own.
