Durante la Navidad de 1942, en Stalingrado los oficiales soviéticos organizaron una serie de reuniones en honor de los actores, músicos y bailarinas que visitaban la ciudad para entretener a las tropas. Uno de estos artistas, el violinista Mijaíl Goldstein, se alejó y se dirigió a las trincheras para llevar a cabo otro de sus conciertos de solista para los soldados. En toda la guerra, Goldstein nunca había visto un campo de batalla parecido a Stalingrado: una ciudad tan terriblemente destruida por las bombas y la artillería, con montones de esqueletos de centenares de caballos descarnados por el hambriento enemigo. El horrible campo de batalla conmovió a Goldstein y tocó como nunca lo había hecho antes. Las melodías interpretadas por él fueron dirigidas mediante altavoces hacia las trincheras alemanas y, de repente, cesó el tiroteo. En el espectral silencio, la música surgía del violín de Goldstein. Cuando acabó, un gran silencio cayó sobre los soldados rusos. Desde otro altavoz, situado en territorio alemán, una voz rompió el hechizo. En un vacilante ruso rogó: "Toquen algo más de Bach. No dispararemos". Goldstein volvió a tomar su violín y empezó a tocar una viva Gavotte de Bach, y durante unos instantes, los soldados de ambos bandos quedaron extasiados por la música, olvidando que estaban librando la batalla mas sangrienta de la historia.
