I used to think that Gould achieved the perfect "Bach sound", but mr. Yuan Sheng has now become my favourite Bach interpret.

of course... and excusme, i like to.... Do you know if Sheng has recorded the English Suites?
@jorgeurzuaurzua40114 жыл бұрын
Yuan Sheng is a young pianist, specialized in Bach under Rosalyn Tureck in the US. Now lives in Beijing, where he teaches and performs. His playing reaches outside Bach (Chopin, Debussy). I have heard him only in recordings of Bach keyboard music. My perception is he plays better than most piano players I have heard, his sound is decisive, bright, cristalline. His sense of timing is faultless. His piano reminds you of Gould and Tureck, but he has achieved mastery and his own personality. I have read he is highly esteemed in China as perhaps the best piano player in his country, I can believe it, I put him at the pinnacle of Bach piano players in the world.

Right.Few people know his enormous talent cause he is not as "comercial" as Lang for example.He plays Bach better than many famous pianists.

Certainly a great recording. It is such artists like this who makes myself, for one, frequently contemplate the uselessness of trying to contemplate which is the BEST performance, the Best interpreter of JSB or any other master for that matter. I do think that it is the music itself to which we are drawn, and that, with any finely trained and practiced performer, the performances are always wonderful, great.
@jorgeurzuaurzua40112 жыл бұрын
@@rsjmd Thanks for your comment. I agree that it is often worthless to search for THE BEST piano player. However, music is the same but sounds differently depending on the interpreter. As an instance, hear the sonata 29 by Beethoven (Hammerklavier) played by Vladimir Ashkenazy or by Grigory Sokolov; you will feel two diverse representations of the same musical score. You may feel better with Sokolov or like Ashkenazy better; perception of music is a very subjective experience, you will feel that one or the other rendering is nearer to your heart. Two years later, you may prefer the rendering that you did not like so much the first time. Music lives within you and is felt differently following your own subjectivity and certainly the interpreter.

Meech You do know that Bach asked for God’s grace and inspiration each time he was writing a piece of music, don’t you? Hence his handwriting "S. D. G." at the end of all his compositions. Check it out yourself before you deny Bach’s most cherished faith and divine privilege.

This is certainly amongst my favorite Bach performances, but I think it goes back to a few essential points always discussed on these posts. There is no perfect performer, performance, style, etc. YT has allowed the world to be exposed to many wonderful performers and recordings. One can find so much to applaud OR to critique, but each fine performance just adds to the totality of beautiful music, not to dissect it into good, better, best. Listen on music lovers.

Almost too elegant. I think Bach had a primitive part in his core and Yuan Sheng wraped that up with the ultimate elegance. Of course I love his performance, probably this is the way Yuan Sheng should be, but I kind of miss the primitive energy of Bach's work at the same time. Listen to the French overture for instance, a very exiting opening, but his rendition is so elegant that the excitement slips away before I notice it. Beautiful to listen, but I can't dive into it.
