Why do the trumpets sounds terribly out of tune?

These are natural trumpets without finger holes, like in Bach's times. They can only play the natural overtones on their base tone.

Yes it is! But “dissident” notes can be lipped into “tune”. But even in equal temperament notes can be bent … it’s all a continuum. Doctrinaire views aren’t always the best ones … English trumpeters sometimes seem to finger away as if they were playing recorders …
