err. viola sound you mean? i think the bow and the accompanying instrument affect it more in this case. Kashkashian's recording with harpsichord is wonderful. But i love this too

I do not quite agree. Otherwise there would be no directions as for which instruments a given pieces is intended. I think (not an expert at any rate) that Bach had a broad musical thinking and probably broad demand so he wrote for different groups of instruments like baroque violins, gamba viol families, contemprorary strings and could use best flavours of each. Maybe such were his customers. This player did a very good job in pulling smooth even slow attack tone even without a baroque bow!
