Of course, Japan didn't realise the US didn't have another atom bomb immediately ready. And any invasion of Japan in November would have been preceded by the destruction of their crops and thus they would have no 1945 harvest, thus adding to the starvation of probably millions by the blockade. The fighting for the island chains made the US well aware of what the fighting would have been like, plus all civilians being urged to fight to the death.

Yes...it was necessary. Japan would likely have suffered millions of deaths from famine alone...invasion or no invasion. Ridiculously easy to second guess decades later.
