My hearts with the su35, but lets be logical about this. China operates both aircraft. If the su35 is much superior, why doesnt china order more? J10 has both an aesa radar, and the pl15 missile that massively out ranges any missiles that the su 35 has. J10 also benefits from the shear scale of the chinese economy, which is 10x russias. All that money put into rd in electronics and weaponery, why is it so hard to believe that the j10 can win in this engagement?

Isn’t this because the SU planes have an older PESA radar and the J10C has an AESA radar. This would give J10C and immediate advantage over SU in network centric warfare. Moreover other sensors and weapons used on J10C are simply better. Having said that … if one would add these on SU then that would also become a formidable platform. Also don’t forget that these simulation are not necessarily a reflection of real combat scenarios … ppl who understand how these exercise work will understand what I mean.

Su-35 has 2 AESA L band radars in the wings for detecting and tracking Stealth aircraft. Su-35 uses hybrid radar system.

Yes, it is partially RAM-coated (radar absorbing material) which makes it a 4.5 gen. fighter. WS-10C engines also allows it to to supercruise (Bronk, RUSI), coupled with PL-15 long range missiles that outranges US' amraams.

It seems to have the right size and agility to fight against other 4th gen fighters. Though seems lacking in payload management. However the design is stealthier so would be good in BVR fights. The close combat ability seems good enough though it won’t matter much with HOBS missiles and HMD. Air to ground ability will be fair with stand off weapon.

China bought 24 su35 for their engines, china at that time was struggling with their ws10 and ws13 engines, they wanted to buy russian powerful saturn engines for their stealth j20s but russia refused to sell engines alone and required china to buy full plane, thats why china had to buy 24 su35 so they could use their engines 8n J20s, now china has overcome technological obstacles in their own engines so it wont rely on russia for any engines or jet purchases.

That’s an exaggeration. War games are done with specific engagement rules which is why euro fighter has beaten f22 in blue red war games. In real life scenario f22 will draw circles around any other jet. Similarly su35 is a bigger plane that can carry a lot of weapons payload and fuel and has a nose that can carry a big huge radar and it has 3 of them. No doubt j10c is a very capable plane, definitely at par with any 4.5 gen plane when loaded with PL10 and 15, and will have an advantage over su35 due to AESA radar (vs PESA) and with better network centric warfare capabilities, but to say that it crushed su35 is misleading to say the least. Also, ppl criticising it for being a Chinese plane are equally ill informed.

The Chinese and Russian aircraft are wasting their time in these aircraft dogfights or close range engagements. Western aircraft will fire before you see them on radar. What matters now is how far off can your radar pick up enemy target and how accurate are your missiles.

You obviously are not informed on the matter really, are you? Both the Russians and the Chinese field longer-range missiles than any of the Western countries. The best the West can field is the MBDA Meteor (with a range of about 190-200 km), which is outranged by the Chinese PL-15 (250-300km) and PL-21 missiles (400km). The Russians possess the R-33 (300km) and R-37(250-400km). The nearest US AIM missile can do about 160 km. Although the US is working on better missiles they are still at the design stage. Both Russia and China possess AESA and PESA radars that have ranges of up to 400 km, more than the effective range of any Western missile system. So in BVR combat the Russians and Chinese, as currently stands, would be the clear winners.

The PL-15 is a 230kg/506lb weight range missile with an 8" body diameter. i.e. Sparrow class. It does NOT have ramjet propulsion and is NOT capable of is NOT capable of 300km/163nm, even with a modern, long chain, dual pulse, solid motor. The export version is stated to be capable of 145km/79nm. This is more realistic, for the volume, unless the Chinese move to a gel or similar exotic. Against an agile target, which sees the launch and cranks or pumps away, you can probably cut this in half, assuming 2-3 shot engagement plan, per target. To reduce to high SSPK levels, engagements will come from under 20nm and attrition will be so horrific as to literally be a coinflip on whether the war continues because the cost of replacing lost airframes will shatter the inventories, manning ratios and budgets of both side. Range may also not be what it seems to be as lasers and miniature self defense interceptors come online with expendable like sizes and multi-carriage and .5-1nm threat kill capabilities. Where aircraft are buses for weapons systems, you cannot exaggerate the qualities of either and expect a realistic assessment of capability.
