'Hijr e aswad' most probably is volcanic glass and not meteorite, It's very rare type of glass and given that it was broken with axe, its more likely that it is a glass and not some meteorite. Meteorite are very hard and need diamond or laser drill for cutting.

@@syedhashmi780 Very good question. Madina(KSA in general) region had several volcanic eruption in history you should look it up. Glass can remain as it is for century without any issue. Rasoolallah was businessman, He could have got that 'Hijr e Aswad' from someone else. Romans who ruled upto Egypt widely used volcanic glass.
