There’s a very sad story behind this song. Saigal used to drink and drink and then face the mike to sing because his so called friends had made him believe that his voice would be more powerful and melodious after he drank. Naushad who composed this song begged him to sing it without drinking and then sing again after drinking. He listened to Naushad and when he noticed the difference between them where the song recorded without drinking was far superior poor Saigal burst into tears and cried over Naushad,s shoulders and told him that you came too late in my life. This film was released in 1946 and Saigal died after a few months

Saigal sahab has no parallel. The void left by him can never be filled. The fan strength may be small in number, but very hard core loyals. It is unfortunate that he passed away very very early when he was 42. Blame is given to alcoholism; but there must be strong reasons which were not noted or cared by his near and dear. Resultantly, his fans are feeling the void.

That too in an industry where the average shelf life of any artist is hardly 8 or 12 months. People like K L Sehgal saab are next to impossible to find.
